    Trivia (6)

    • Historical: A steam-ship named the Hispania did indeed sink. On the 18th December 1954 the Swedish ship Hispania sank.

    • This episode had no introduction.

    • In all other episodes The Old One's refer to each other as Number 1 and Number 2 and by others as Captain Smith and Commander Jones. Except in this episode where Jones is refered to as Captain Jones.

    • During season 1 we are led to believe that Dante is a member of The Shadows which would mean that his tribe has been on the island since 1843. This is however contradicted in season 2.

    • Goof: The wrong tooth has been blacked out for Dante's disguise as Tempus. This is the first of many make-up mistakes with his teeth during Season 2.

    • Goof: No teeth were blacked out for Dante as Tempus when he re-entered the castle after the Stormers attack.

    Allusions (15)

    • Literature Reference: A play written in the late 1870's was entitled "The Pirates of Penzance" which is most likely where the name of the ship was taken from.

    • Historical Reference: The introduction shows us Robert Louis Stevenson dying in Samoa and then both voyages beginning there. This is historically correct as he was born on the 13th November 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland and died on the 3rd December 1894 in Samoa.

    • Literature Reference: The "Hispania" is a reference to the "Hispanolia", the boat which was under the charge of Captain Smollett in the novel of "Treasure Island".

    • Literature: Name of the submarine : HMS Walrus. Using the name HMS Walrus for the Old One's submarine is possibly a reference to the name of Captain Flint's own ship the Walrus.

    • Literature: Ben Gunn's symbol and picture. Orginally Ben Gunn was a member of Flint's crew but was left on the island for 3 years to survive on his own, during this time he stumbles across the treasure and re-buries it. This gives him the chance to save Jim and Long John Silver's life when the pirates return to claim it. In the story he got off the island and spend his share of the fortune in 3 weeks.

    • Landmark Reference: While Mark is researching Stone Circles one of the pictures he brings up is Stonehenge in England which is said to date back some 4000 years.

    • Book Reference: A reference is again made, as Hans-Peter and Mark are digging for the treasure at the Stone Circle / Spyglass Hill, to Ben Gunn when he buried it.

    • Literature Reference: The title of this episode refers to the Fortress of the Damned which is commonly used in texts about vampires and ancient castles. While there were no vampires in this episode, the ancient castle and the hooded figures give an indication of something sinister.
