  • show Description
  • Welcome to the Secret Agent Man guide at TV.com. In the wake of the latest James Bond movie, the United Paramount Network (UPN) introduced this new series as a mid-season replacement in March of 2000. Staring Costas Mandylor (Picket Fences), Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers), and Dondre Whitfield (The Crew), it was the stylish and nitro-fueled adventures of a trio of agents working for the mysterious Agency, and each week they defended the free world against a variety of evil terrorists, rogue agents, and megalomaniacs bent on world domination. Created by Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) and Barry Josephson (Wild Wild West), the pair also acted as Executive Producers for the series. While not a spin-off or even an update of the 60's spy classic Secret Agent, this new series did share the same theme song, "Secret Agent Man". The song was written by the team of Phil Sloan and Steve Barri, and originally sung by Johnny Rivers. This time around it was now updated for the 21st Century by ‘The Supreme Beings of Leisure'. While developing a small cult following, the ratings were poor, and UPN called an end to the series after only twelve episodes.moreless

    • Davis: (wheeling the paralyzed Arno out of the school) This paralyzer gun sure makes transport easier, right Oslo? Holiday: That's Arno. He's bad in bed, remember? No one can say you don't get stiff, huh buddy? (she pats his arm and he tumbles over with a yelp)

    • Pagnol: English accent is standard of course.

    • Holiday: I never mix business with nausea.

    • Holiday: Assassination by bad taste, what a way to go.

    • Brubeck: The Z-Fin Submersible holds two men, able to mate with all known classes of submarines. Resource Management has been telling me that it can couple undetected with any moving body. Holiday: Ha, sorta like Monk.

    • Monk: You know, I haven't properly thanked you for saving my life. Holiday: My swift, unimpeded departure is all the thanks I ask.

    • Davis (after watching Holiday burn a hole in a fence): Ah, does it ever occur to you guys just to climb the fence? Holiday: Why?

    Notes (19)

    • Secret Agent Man is executive-produced by Barry Sonnefeld, director of the movie Men In Black. UPN promised Sonnefeld full control over this series, after he lost creative control over his previous show, ABC's Fantasy Island.

    • The four leading characters are all named after jazz musicians, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck.

    • Why they showed this one first is a mystery, it doesn't actually make a great deal of sense unless you've seen TKO Henry. During one scene Prima apologises for shooting Monk in the leg, which she does in TKO.

    • The poorest episode of the series ironically has the best gadget of them all, in the form of Agent Davis's Quantum Wave-Powered Vacuum Pen. Just click the fob and it can suck the lock out of a door, a bullet out of the air, and even contain a spilled virus. Just don't point it near your face, 'cause it can suck your eyes from their sockets. I want one. :)

    • An interesting look into Holiday's past by showing the boarding school she grew up at. And when it is revealed as a training ground for the Agency, she is greatly annoyed to discover that she had been selected and manipulated from a very young age to become an agent. This is but one of many slights against her by her employers. If the show had lasted longer and taken itself a little more seriously, perhaps the rift would have become the driving lynch-pin for the series. She may even have gone rogue.

    • At the beginning of the episode Davis is in Europe touring with Britney Spears, who is revealed to be one of the Agency's top agents.

    • Super-soldier Lacey is portrayed by Rhona Mitra, better known as the original live action Lara Croft model for the Tomb Raider series of video games.

    • Originally scheduled to air April 11, 2000.

    Trivia (7)

    • In the worst action sequence in the entire series, Holiday stops Talbolt from escaping with a bow. The arrow she shoots misses her by easily an inch but the actress responds like it went through her left shoulder, even though it can be seen beside it. Then in the next shot she is actually holding onto the shaft like it has gone through her right hand instead?! But she is very obviously just holding it. Unbelievably bad direction, it was like they didn't even care.

    • The Agency scientist who becomes infected by the microbe and dies at headquarters is named 'Ethrington', and is called this twice. But Agent Holiday very cleary calls him 'Effingten' when it's her turn to talk to him.

    • As Monk hangs from the side of the balloon, his wedding band can be clearly seen. Then it vanishes from his finger never to return.

    • Echo-7's periscope changes color each time it's seen. For example, first it's black, then next time it appears it's bright copper.

    • Actress Grace Park plays a character named Louann that Monk meets while hiding in Hong Kong. Grace Park also played the part of an Agency staff member in "From Prima With Love".

    • When Monk and company locate Henry for the first time, they find him manipulating a jet-fighter with his mind. The plane that he taxis around the air field before launching it is a slightly different model then the one that is shown in flight. The ground model has a permanently open cockpit and yellow markings, but the one in the air has a sealed cockpit and no markings at all.

    • Johnny Rivers wrote the theme song for the TV show "Secret Agent Man".
