  • show Description
  • Sinbad finds himself at sea having fled his home - and had a curse put on him by his grandmother - in his hometown of Basra. Of course, it's not plain sailing and his ship, Providence, soon stumbles across a storm which forces the unlikely band of travellers together. The 12-part series promises "a 21st century take on the classic 8th century iconic hero" for Sky1. Newcomer Elliot Knight plays Sinbad while his nemesis Lord Akbari is played by Lost's Naveen Andrews. This will rebroadcast in America on Syfy on June 8th, 2013.moreless

    • Tazeem: Let's not forget about how women feel about a man with a guard collar.
Jamil: How is that girl you've been seeing?
Tazeem: Oh, she said those magical words to me. "I think of you... like a brother."
      Jamil: Ooh.
Tazeem: (shoves Sinbad) Then she asked me about you, which was sickening.
Jamil: Try being related to him.

    • Jamil: I never get tired of this view. City as far as the eyes can see. So many people, so many possibilities. Did I tell you about my dream the other night?
Sinbad: Was it one where you just stop speaking for a moment?

    • Akbari: What does mercy truly mean? Is it a sign of strength or one of weakness? And then I think of your kind, breeding in the alleys like rats infesting our city. And the question of mercy falls into nothing.

    • Anwar: That doesn't look good. (applies medicine)
      Sinbad: Ahhh!
Anwar: Yes, it might sting a little it.
Sinbad: You're meant to tell me that before you put it on, not after.
      Anwar: Yes, good point.

    • Anwar: You saved our lives. Steering us through that wave and then diving below. Magnificent, really.
Sinbad: If I'd known you were going to talk so much, I wouldn't have bothered.

    • Jamil: Brother, relax. Take a deep breath and smile. There's a whole new world of adventure out there.

    • Anwar: Look, this is an adventure. Like in a book, don't you think?
Rina: We have nothing in common.
Cook: We all survived the storm.
Gunnar: She is right. We all travel different paths.
Sinbad: Look. What happened to your sense of adventure, hmm? That, my friends, is freedom!
Gunnar: Adventure is best left in books.

    • Sinbad: I am Sinbad!
Razia: Should I have heard of you?
Sinbad: Ha! Whether you have or not, you will never forget me!
Razia: I'll take him. He has a sense of humor... and promises to keep!

    • Broadcast in 1080i HD.

    • During the storm scene Elliot Knight almost drowned, after the force of the water pushed him down a hatch, and shooting down some stairs.

    • International Airdates:
Canada: July 8, 2012 on Space
US: June 9, 2013 on SyFy

    • Sinbad was Elliot Knight's first acting role. The producers deliberately chose a newcomer so they would have someone "fresh, surprising and cool, but also vulnerable.

    • Visual effects supervisor Dave Houghton watched the movies of famed stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen for inspiration to create his own monsters for the series, as well as books of original Arabic folklore.

    • Six weeks of post-production work went into producing the special effects for this and every subsequent episode.

    • Although it is not named on-screen, the water creature that attacks the Providence is referred to as a Sha Ma'aa in the script and by the special effects producers.

    • Famed SFX company The Mill, which has worked on British shows such as Doctor Who and won an Oscar for their work on Gladiator, created the special effects for the series.
