  • show Description
  • Skins is a BAFTA-winning British teen drama that follows a group of teenagers in Bristol, England in their last two pre-college years. The show explores several controversial themes in their grueling realism, including mental illness, dysfunctional family life, the club scene, sexual orientation, substance abuse, and death. All of this in addition to the more typical teen drama plots revolving around friendships, love, and sex. Bryan Elsely and Jamie Brittain wrote the pilot and continue to heavily influence the writing team, also consisting of teens. The show premiered on E4 in January 2007. A unique quality about the show is that it brings in a new group or generation of cast members every two seasons. Skins is currently on its fifth series or season and it's 3rd generation of characters. The show has served as a launching pad for first-time actors. For many of the stars, it's their first gig, but for many of them, it won't be their last. The first generation consisted of Tony Stonem (Nicholas Hoult), Michelle Richardson (April Pearson), Sid Jenkins (Mike Bailey), Cassie Ainsworth (Hannah Murray), Chris Miles (Joe Dempsie), Jal Fazer (Larissa Wilson), Maxxie Oliver (Mitch Hewer), Anwar Kharral (Dev Patel), and Effy Stonem (Kaya Scodelario). The second generation consisted of Effy Stonem (Kaya Scodelario), Pandora Moon (Lisa Blackwell), Thomas Tomone (Merveille Lukeba), James Cook (Jack O'Connell), Freddie McLair (Luke Pasqualino), JJ Jones (Ollie Barbieri), Emily Fitch (Kathryn Prescott), Katie Fitch (Megan Prescott), and Naomi Campbell (Lily Loveless). The third generation consisted of Franky Fitzgerald (Dakota Blue Richards), Alo Creevey (Will Merrick), Rich Hardbeck (Alexander Arnold), Mini McGuinness (Freya Mavor), Liv Malone (Laya Lewis), Grace Violet Blood (Jessica Sula), Nick Levan (Sean Teale), and Matty Levan (Sebastian De Souza).moreless

    • Tony: I say this world extends way beyond this little field of dreams we're dancing in, and I wanna see that world.
Chris: What the f--k's he on about?
Jal: He's quoting, Chris. It's a literary reference.
Chris: What do you mean, like Shakespeare and sh-t?
      Jal: Dawson's Creek.

    • Tony: (singing) I have often walked down this street before; But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before. All at once am I Several stories high. Knowing I'm on the street where you live. Are there lilac trees in the heart of town? Can you hear a lark in any other part of town? Does enchantment pour Out of ev'ry door? No, it's just on the street where you live! And oh! The towering feeling Just to know somehow you are near. The overpowering feeling That any second you may suddenly appear! People stop and stare. They don't bother me. For there's no where else on earth that I would rather be. Let the time go by, I won't care if I Can be here on the street where you live. Woman: That was lovely Anthony. Really quite lovely. Tony: Thanks. Woman: We would love to have you in the Chamber Choir. Tony: Looking forward to it. Abigail: My friends think you're really cool yeah. So are you stilling coming to my party tonight? It'd be so safe if you did.

    • Maxxie: Where are you going? Chris: To find that party. Maxxie: Nah! Chris: Look, it's posh kids! All the boys are gay! Maxxie: Yea? Anwar: Are the girls gay, too? Chris: Look... everyone's gay!

    • Tony: How's the treatment going, Cassie? Cassie: Oh, it's cool. I wear a white dress and now I can eat yogurt, cup-a-soup, and hazelnuts now. I'm not sick if they let me play with the cats. Yeah, it's like... hazy days, y'know? Tony: Well, that's encouraging.

    • Tony: Tonight's the night, Sid. You finally pop the cherry, you finally get the VIP tour of Neverland, you finally... Sid: Fuck off. (mutters) Don't make fun of me.

    • Michelle: Cassie's great in bed, as long as she's not hungry. Sid: Who says? Michelle & Tony: Everyone.

    • Sid: But what would you do if you were in my situation? Cassie: I'd just stop eating until they take me back into hospital.

    • Chris: Right, you brain-deads. Can you not think of anything better to entertain yourselves with? Jal: Like...? Chris: Like... pills!

    Trivia (97)

    • In the episode, Chris is shown a bed where he is told that Lord Napoleon sucked the toes of Brigitte Bardot. However this is historically impossible as Napoleon died before Bardot was born.

    • Goof: Amwar was peeing against a tree when the car rolled into the canal, yet as everyone walked back home, he was wet as well, but he was the only one who didn't go in the water.

    • Goof: As Sid sits with Tony in the cafe, the ketchup dribble on his chin keeps changing shape between shots. It even disappears then comes back at one point.

    • Trivia: The book Tony is reading in the bathroom is La Nausée by Jean-Paul Sartre.

    • Trivia: Although Kaya Scodelario did appear on-screen as Effy in this episode, the actress did not have any lines.

    • Goof: During the party, Cassie's eyeshadow changes color. It starts off as a pale green, but on the trampoline it is a pale purple. It later returns to being green again.

    • In the cafeteria scene, Cassie organizes Sid's fries in a linear fashion and then mixes and chops her own dish in an elaborate way. These are actually very common rituals of someone with an eating disorder.

    • Goof: Sid's story about what he did after leaving Michelle's doesn't make sense; he was half naked on leaving Michelle's house, so he either went back later to collect his clothes (which seems unlikely as the Police were called) or went home (which he denied doing when Cassie asked him).

    Allusions (20)

    • The scene in which Tony's dad (Harry Enfield) telling him to turn his music down and he refuses is similar to a scene in Kevin & Perry Go Large in which Harry Enfield also stars.

    • The dinnerlady, Marnie's, reference to Jamie Oliver is an allusion to a British chef whose shocking television series on school meals led to school canteens being forced to make their food more healthy.

    • Chris refers to The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys are an American rock and roll band. Formed in 1961, it gained popularity for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a California youth culture of surfing, girls, and cars.

    • In this episode we see Anwar on Sid's left shoulder as an angel and Maxxie on Sid's right shoulder as the devil. The angel and devil represent one's conscience when making choices. The angel and devil have been seen in many cartoons, films and television programmes.

    • Chris: It's like a f****n' episode of The O.C. in here.

Chris references the popular US-based show, The O.C., which enjoyed a surge of popularity from 2003 until its ultimate demise in 2007.

    • The asylum/rehab centre where Sid and Michelle visit Cassie bears a lot of similarity to the town of Portmeirion as seen in the 1960's show The Prisoner, which included a lot of insanely happy people, an overly romanticised view of an English country garden and a large blow up ball (all seen here).

    • Maxxie's Dad: You didn't turn out like the f***ing asbo army out there. An ASBO is an 'Anti-Social behaviour Order', which are commonly associated with youths on estates.

    • The episode title "Tony and Maxxie" is an allusion to the first episode of the first season, "Tony". As the gang's leader, Tony has each season opener named for him.
