  • show Description
  • This animated series was produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, with the character of Spider-Woman being specifically created in order for Marvel Comics to have a female counterpart to Spider-Man before any other comics company thought of the idea. She first appeared in the comic Marvel Spotlight #32 in February 1977 and was originally intended to actually be a genetically altered spider, having been evolved into human form, named Arachne. This story was changed for her next appearance in Spider-Woman #1 in April 1978, where it was said that spider powers were granted to Jessica Drew by the character of the High Evolutionary (later a regular character in the Spider-Man Unlimited TV show). For the TV show, only Spider-Woman's real name and powers were kept intact from the comicbook. Everything else about the show's setup was created specifically for the television series. Her origin for the TV show was that as a child she was bitten by a poisonous spider. Her father, Dr. Alexander Drew saved her life by using an untested spider serum that inadvertently gave her spider powers. And now, with Jessica as the head of Justice Magazine, she battles evil as Spider-Woman, with the help of photographer Jeff Hunt, and her nephew Billy Drew.moreless

    • (After Spider-Woman frees Jeff & Billy) Spider-Man: Any minute now and. (Struggling against his energy bands) There. (Freeing himself of the bands) Hang on fellas. You'll be free in a (Seeing that there're already free) Huh? Spider-Woman: You were saying. Spider-Man: Spider-Woman! Spider-Woman: You were expecting maybe the Hulk?

    • (After falling in the Mummy King's trap) Spider-Woman: I don't think I like the looks of this. Mummy King: Don't worry, Spider-Woman. You won't be seeing it for long. (The Mummy King laughs sinisterly as the trap door closes)

    • (At Justice Magazine) Jessica: I don't understand it. How did the mummy come to life? And where was it going? Jeff: Oh don't worry about it, Jessica. It's probably just some publicity stunt that the museum dreamed up. Jessica: (Thinking to herself) My spider sense says otherwise. (Looking at the mummy photos) But these photos seem sinisterly real. Jeff: Forget it, Jessica. It was just a one in a million freak accident I'm sure we'll hear nothing else about it. Billy: Aunt Jessica. Have you heard. There have been mummies spotted all over the country. Jessica: One in a million, huh. I better call Chief Cooper. Jeff: (To Billy) Thanks a lot.

    • (after Jessica tells Jeff and Billy that Spider-Woman saved her) Jeff: I told you this work is too dangerous for a woman. You could've been killed! Jessica: Don't be ridiculous. I'm as brave as any man. (a spider crawls up on leg and she screams) Ahhh, a spider! Billy: Oh, aunt Jessica. If only you could be a little more like Spider-Woman.

    • <>(inside the pyramid) Spider-Woman: I've studied hieroglyphics before but I've never seen anything like these. They look like scientific symbols of some advances civilization. Mummy King: That is correct, Spider-Wioman. So advanced that we must rid the earth of your inferior human kind. Spider-Woman: I'll admit we are not perfect but I wouldn't say we are any less civilized than your gift wrapped friends.

    • (as the curtain rips and Jeff falls from the window) Spider-Woman: Hmm, looks like it's curtains for Jeff. (Spider-Woman shoots a spiderline out catching him)

    • (Jeff and Billy rush to Jessica who's passed out on the floor) Jessica: Speak to me. Jessica: What? Oh, I must have passed out again. Did I miss the eclipse? Jeff: Some new pro you are! You just missed the biggest story of the year. Why, Spider-Woman and I nearly lost our lives saving the world from that deadly Dormammu.

    • (after figuring out how to defeat Dormammu) Spider-Woman: On second thought, I don't think you can stop a garden spider, you over grown hot head!

    Notes (9)

    • This episode was released on VHS as Marvel Comics Video Library Volume 23 "Spider-Woman".

    • Apparently Spider-Woman's powers are as follows: Spider Sense(clairvoyance) Flight Spider Telepathy (able to communicate with spiders) Venom Blast

    • For Spider-Man's appearance in this episode and "The Kongo Spider", his costume is presented correctly, apart from his eyes, which are yellow (like Spider-Woman's) rather than white.

    • This is the first of two episodes to guest-star Spider-Man.

    • Dormammu bears little relation to his comicbook look, instead bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Green Goblin!

    • This is the second of two episodes to guest-star Spider-Man.

    • This episode was released on VHS as Marvel Comics Video Library Volume 13 "Spider-Woman: Games Of Doom".

    • This episode was released on VHS as Marvel Comics Video Library Volume 6 "The Fly: Spider-Woman And The Fly".

    Trivia (5)

    • It is never explained just how Spidey just happened to be in Egypt at the beginning of the mummies' invasion. Perhaps his spider sense went into overdrive and compelled him to go to Egypt?

    • Spider-Woman reveals an ultra-high frequency spider shriek ability that she emits from her vocal cords as a concussive blast force to escape the boulder creatures.

    • Dormammu's powers seem to be a *bit* inconsistent during the ending of the episode. One of his blasts barely stuns an already weakened Spiderwoman...while the following one, once deflected, PUSHES THE WHOLE MOOON AWAY!

    • Some of Dracula's minions during the final confrontation with Spiderwoman are wolfmen, and that includes Jessica's friends. That would be impossible, since Jessica had already defeated the original Wolf Man, causing every other lycanthrope spawned by him to revert to human form!

    • In this episode, we learn more of how Jessica Drew got bitten by the radioactive spider, her father giving her the untested spider serium that results in her finding out that she has spider powers and becomes Spider-Woman.
