Trivia, Quotes, Notes and Allusions
(after leading the network execs out of a meeting onto a long walk about the offices while relating a story) Sam: One last thing. The first and last decision making authority on this show will rest with Isaac Jaffe until Isaac Jaffe says otherwise. (pauses) And if you disrespect him in my presence again, I will re-dedicate the rest of my life to ruining the rest of yours. And if you think I'm just mouthing at ya, I suggest you ask around about me. I have absolutely no conscience about these things. J.J.: Sam, why did you bring us out here? Sam: 'Cause, there's the exit! That's it. The meeting's over. (walks away, leaving the network execs aghast)
(After leading the network bozos out of the conference room, after the staff has walked out on them, to the studio, while relating to them the story of Philo Farnesworth, the inventor of television and especially his brother in law, Cliff Gardner, who learned how to blow glass in order to help him get the glass tubes he'd need for making TVs) Sam: I've looked over the notes you've been giving over the last year or so. I have to say they exhibit an almost total lack of understanding of how to get the best from talented people. Tasker: Excuse me, but... Sam: You said before that, for whatever reason, I seem to be able to exert some authority around here? I assure you, it's not because they like me. It's because they knew, two minutes after I walked in the door, I'm someone who knows how to do something... I can help. (smiling broadly) I can make glass tubes. That's what they need.
(after a meeting in which Dan said something mean to Dana in the heat of the moment which had a ring of truth to it but was overly blunt) Dan: I have gifts for you. Dana: That wasn't necessary. Dan: I think it was. You once took a trip to Napa and you visited a small vineyard there. You told me you tried some wine that you loved and could never find it anywhere. I thought I remembered the name but I wasn't sure. (pulls wine bottle out of bag, shows it to her) Is this it? Dana: (she looks at the bottle, eyebrows raise) Yes. Dan: Good! I always like wine with cheese. Dana: I know. Dan: I wanted to get you some cheese. There's a great cheese place over on Second Avenue. I went over there after I got the wine but it's gone... there's a hardware store there now. Dana: That's OK. Dan: (reaching into bag) I got you some spackle. Dana: (cracks up) Thank you!
Cliff Gardner as a title refers to a story Sam tells J.J. and the boys before kicking them out. Cliff Gardner was the brother in law of Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of television. Although he couldn't help with the scientific parts, he knew that Philo would need glass tubes to make this invention. He set up a shop in the backyard and blew glass tubes, which today is known as the cathode receptor in Sam's tale or more commonly as the Cathode Ray Tube, or "CRT".
Sam Donovon ends his tiny speech to the crew by saying "I won't make fools of you," which is also the last thing Dan says to Rebecca to get her to date him in "Dana and the Deep Blue Sea."
Sam's character notes he has two priorities, one of which is getting from "the beginning of the day to the end of the day without having a drink", which suggests he has an alcohol problem.
