  • show Description
  • This series was a standard fare anthology series that aired on ABC for roughly a year and a half. The network no doubt wanted to keep expenses down as it was scheduled against the highly-rated Dragnet airing on NBC. Telecast live from New York City, it's advertised "hook" was as a showcase for relatively unknown, hopefully soon-to-be famous actors. This gimmick cut out huge salaries that otherwise would have been paid for famous name stars.moreless

    • This story was also adapted for episodes of Lights Out (7/23/1951) and Ray Bradbury Theater (1/10/1992).

    • Harry W. Junkin wrote Long Distance for the 9/25/1948 premiere episode of the NBC radio series Radio City Playhouse. (Junkin was the host as well as Director of Production.) It was repeated 8/23/48 and later used again by Junkin on the NBC radio series The Chase airing 11/2/1952. On television, it was performed on Lights Out 8/2/1949, on Lux Video Theatre 3/12/1951 and 4/23/1953, and Schlitz Playhouse of Stars 7/25/1958.

    • This episode is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's story "Four Hours Between Planes", first published in Esquire July 1941.

    • Writer Stanley Richards based this story on an actual event told to him by a telephone switchboard operator: his mother. She had fallen in love with a voice on the phone and agreed to meet the man on a blind date in the Waldorf hotel lobby. He was going to wear a red rose on his lapel so she'd recognize him. She spotted him and was horrified because he was four-heads shorter than she. His mother did not keep the date.
