  • Quotes (16)

    • Jake: (after his first article for the Starfleet News Service is published) You're news!
Sisko: Don't remind me! (grudgingly) Guess I can't stop you from doing your job.
Jake: Can I quote you on that? (Sisko gives him a dirty look) I guess not.

    • Sisko: Maintain current course. Jadzia: Aye, captain. We should rendezvous with the Federation task force in forty-eight hours. Bashir: And then what? Nog: And then we make the Dominion sorry they ever set foot in the Alpha Quadrant. Sisko: Cadet, you took the words right out of my mouth.

    • Quark: Leeta, that fifteen minute break you asked for was up an hour ago! Rom: Brother, what do you think of this dress? Quark: I don't want to think about, all I know is that any marriage where the female is allowed to speak and wear clothing is doomed to failure.

    • Kira: Captain, as a major in the Bajoran Militia, I must officially protest Starfleet's refusal to turn over this station to my government Sisko: Your protest is duly noted. Kira: Good. Now that that's out of the way... Kira Nerys reporting for duty.

    • Garak: Let me tell you a story. I once knew a Cardassian, a dashing, handsome young man with a promising career. And then one day, through no fault of his own, he found himself exiled and alone, with nowhere to turn. But did he give up? No. Instead he struck upon a brilliant plan. Rather than fleeing for the rest of his life, he sought shelter in the one place no one expected him to go. In a stronghold of his people's most hated enemies. There, surrounded by hostile strangers, he built a life. And there, against all odds, against the merciless logic of the Universe itself, he thrived. Ziyal: By becoming the greatest tailor in the galaxy.

    Notes (5)

    • Ferengi Rules of Acquisition #190: "Hear all, trust nothing."

    • At the time of this episode, the Dominion has signed non-agression pacts with the Romulans, the Tholians and the Miradorn.

    • The beginning of the Dominion War.

    • Jadzia agrees to marry Worf.

    • The final scene of this episode features one of the largest fleets of Federation starships ever seen on screen.

    Trivia (3)

    • This is the first episode to ever show multiple Defiant Class Warships together in a scene.

    • Nitpick: Much of the damage and battle footage was re-used from DS9: "The Way of the Warrior"

    • Nitpick: During the battle for DS9, Weyoun seems surprised that the station's Federation shields are withstanding the Dominion weapons fire, as in previous encounters Federation shields had always proven ineffective (i.e. USS Odyssey). Yet he shouldn't be that surprised, as the Defiant, in it's 3 years of service at this point, has always withstood attacks from Dominion weapons, so it shouldn't be surprising that the Federation would do the same to other ships/stations.

    Allusions (3)

    • Historical Parallels Ronald D. Moore commented that historical parallels brought up during the story discussions included the events depicted in Tolstoy's War And Peace, the fall of the Philippines in WWII, and the evacuation of Dunkirk.

    • Sisko: (a log entry) As someone once said: "These are the times that try men's souls." This quote is from Thomas Paine's 1776 revolutionary pamphlet The American Crisis.

    • Rom: get on that shuttlecraft, and don't look back.
The speech Rom gives to Leeta is the same one Humphrey Bogart gives in Casablanca, with a few modifications.
