  • An exciting (but not entirely original) episode, with some interesting interactions between various characters.

    • Worf: Defiant Log, supplemental. Damage control teams are repairing the ships systems and medics are tending to injured crew members. We have located the Karemma ship deep in the atmosphere and are moving to assist. It appears that it will have to be abandoned, and its crew brought back to Deep Space 9 until transportation can be arranged to the Karemma homeworld.

    • Kira: (as Sisko gets worse) Captain, I know my beliefs make you uncomfortable around me sometimes, and maybe that's why you keep me at arm's length, but I don't care about that right now! And I am gonna pray, because I don't know what else to do! I'm losing you and I can't let that happen!

    • Bashir: (on Julian's romantic pursuit of Dax) You enjoyed being chased, and now you miss it! Jadzia: That's preposterous! And if you start chasing me again... Bashir: Don't worry, Jadzia, now I know you liked it, I don't need to, do I?

    • Quark: (after a defective torpedo hits the mess hall) I thought you said you'd never sold substandard merchandise? It was supposed to explode on impact, wasn't it?
Hanok: Maybe I should offer them a refund...

    • Jadzia: (after Bashir saves Dax) It's funny... if you'd done something like this a year ago, I would've thought you were trying to be a hero.
      Bashir: And now?
Jadzia: Now that I know you better... I realize it was just a stupid thing to do.

    Notes (6)

    • The original concept for this episode involved the Defiant plunging into an alien sea and included a scene in which Odo accesses damaged sections of the ship by flowing in with rushing water in his fluid form. Due to budgetary constraints, the setting was changed from a sea to the atmosphere of a gas giant and Odo's scene written out.

    • Sisko invites Kira to her first baseball game at the end of this episode.

    • Bashir tells Jadzia how he used to dream about being trapped just with her in a drifting runabout, waiting for the rescue. This sounds exactly like the plot of the Enterprise episode "Shuttlepod One".

    • Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) does not appear in this episode.

    • James Cromwell (Minister Hanok) is no stranger to Star Trek. He appeared in three episodes of The Next Generation, and his appearance as human warp drive inventor Zephram Cochrane in Star Trek: First Contact was reprised twice in archive footage in Enterprise.

    Trivia (1)

    • Nitpick: When the force field collapsed, all the outside gas should have come rushing in and it should've been impossible for Jadzia and Bashir to find a room in that section of the ship with breathable air.
