  • This is Mark Lenard's only Star Trek appearance without Leonard Nimoy.

  • Spock is mentioned by name at the very end by Picard during his emotional outburst-- it is also the only time Spock is mentioned in the shooting script.

  • First appearance of the character Sarek in the series. He will later appear in "Unification (1)."

Trivia (5)

  • Sarek says that no human can withstand the emotional turmoil that is the Vulcan psyche. It's not made clear why he can't merge with one of his Vulcan staff, including Sakkath who has already been helping him maintain control.

  • During the Mozart concert, the second piece of music played is actually the andante in D-minor movement of Brahms' "Sextet #1 in B-Flat Major" played by only four musicians rather than six.

  • Trivia: Ambassador Sarek is 202 years old. The last time he was seen on the Enterprise, he was 102 years old.

  • Picard mentions early in the episode that he once met Sarek at "his son's wedding." We assume that the son he's referring to is Spock (unless Sarek had another son of whom we've never been made aware). We never hear anything further, however, about Spock ever having been married.

  • Chief O'Brien is incorrectly wearing Lieutenant's pips.
