One thing I like about Stargate SG1 is how unethical decisions come to bite people in their arses; a Stargate karma so to speak. It's a good didactic technique for kids watching the show. In this case, Fifth is betrayed by Carter and O'Neill even though he trusts them but then comes back and not only tortures Carter but also creates a replica of her that gains the trust of Carter and betrays her and endangers everyone. The price paid for short-sighted thinking seems to be high, especially when the voices of the SG1 conscience (Jackson, Quinn) are ignored.

It may seem like I'm taking it all a bit seriously but I watch the show with my kids, so it helps to point stuff like this out. One of the nice things I liked about Star Trek was its extremely positive depiction of the future. In reality we face a whole host of problems before we can get together but for a show created in the 60s, it portrayed a human race that had gotten past their prejudices. SG1's conscience characters are also like that but the military intelligence runs roughshod over individuals and then ends up paying a steep price.
