  • show Description
  • Stella, a comedic satire of everyday life, features the talents of Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain. Don't let the suits fool you…the maturity level of these guys doesn't always match their attire. As they go through their day they spread their sarcasm and wit-tinged non-sensical comedy to everyone they meet. The show was based on the stage-comedy and videos of the troupe of the same name by Black, Showalter, and Wain, who also wrote, produced and helped in directing the show.moreless

    • Libby Green: David, do you know my husband, Edward Norton.

    • (Mr. Muller knocks on the door) Showalter, Black and David: Who is it? Muller: It's Mr. Muller let me in. Showalter, Black and David: Come in. Muller: The door is locked let me in. Showalter: We can't move, were in a tableau. David: You're going to have to let yourself in the key is under the rug. Muller: There is no rug. David: No rug? Showalter: You know what? I'm remembering now, I took the rug to the drycleaners, it was filthy. Black: It was filthy, David. David: Our bad, Don. the rug is at the cleaners you're going to have to go get it.

    • (David hangs up the phone) Showalter: Who was that? David: It was Mr.Muller, the landlord. Black: He is such a Nazi. Showalter: Micheal, not all Germans are Nazis. Black: That's not my understanding.

    • Micheal Ian Black: Hey here's a compromise, instead of listening to funkROCK, why don't we listen to FUNKrock.

    • (As a mustachioed business tycoon.) David Wain: I haven't laughed this hard since my last business transaction!

    • (After the long heart surgery the guys perform on Don Mueller. To the tenets waiting to see if he's okay:) Michael Showalter: It was real touch-and-go there for a little while, but... we think he's going to make it. (The people celebrate) Michael Ian Black: You guys... You guys. He's dead.

    • Co-op Board President: Excuse me, but why are you all dressed as skunks? Michael Ian Black: Oh, no. If I may. We're not dressed as skunks. We're dressed as skunk people. (This exchange is seen after the trio turn around and we see that they are wearing skunk tails.)

    • Michael: Members of the co-op board, all black.

    Notes (14)

    • When David Wain goes to profess his love it's raining outside. He enters the apartment building and it's raining inside the hallway as he stands outside his true love's door. Miraculous!

    • The stunt double dancers are shown in the dance sequence. It's not a goof - it was obviously left in to be funny. Further note, this was meant to spoof the fact that the body double was rather noticeable in Flashdance, of which the dance scene parodied.

    • Michael Showalter's line "We don't have this money" and delivery can also be heard in the Stella Short entitled "Pizza."

    • Ryan Giese, Justin Barnes and Ed Driscoll did the skateboarding for the three stars.

    • The song played during the games montage is "Higher and Higher," by Theodore Shapiro and Craig Wedren. The musical team scored the State comedy troupe movie "Wet Hot American Summer," and this song was used in a similar "generic '80s montage." Michael, Michael, and David were part of the State, as was guest star Joe Lo Truglio. Guest star Paul Rudd also starred in "Wet Hot American Summer"--as Michael Showalter's nemesis.

    • Michael, Michael, and David: Who is it? This collective line, said when the neighbor girls ring the trio's doorbell, is delivered in the same way as in the Pilot when Don Mueller comes to the apartment.

    • Listen to the music playing when Brian (David Wain) enters his bedroom and opens the closet where a suit from his "old wardrobe" is hanging: it's an orchestral version of the show's funky theme music.

    • Michael Ian Black's line "I want you inside me" (to Tamara) was also used in Stella's Comedy Central Presents show. The guys told the audience to turn to the person next to them and say "I want you inside me".

    Trivia (11)

    • When Michael, Michael and David are dancing to the Funk Rock, you are seeing them from outside of their apartment window, but in the next frame it shows them inside the apartment with the curtains drawn.

    • Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain all were on the early 90's MTV show 'The State,' along with Reno 911 vets Thomas Lenon, Robert Ben Garant, and Kerri Kenney.

    • A portion of this episode was shown during Stella's live show tour as a short skit.

    • A.D. Miles, Heidi Neurauter, and Zak Orth all appear in various skits featured on the Stella Shorts dvd.

    • David Wain appeared in guest star Edward Norton's film Keeping the Faith.

    • Paul Rudd makes an appearance in the Stella short "The Woods". He also co-stars as "Andy" in the Michael Showalter and David Wain vehicle "Wet Hot American Summer" and in Michael Showalter's "The Baxter".

    • Sam Rockwell makes an appearance in the Stella short "Bored" as a degenerate pizza delivery boy.

    • Guest Ken Marino is a former castmate of Michael, Michael and David's from The State. He has collaborated with them on several other projects since then including Wet Hot American Summer.

    Allusions (21)

    • The song "Higher and Higher" by Theodore Shapiro and Craig Wedren is a reference to the film "Wet Hot American Summer"

    • Michael Showalter: Are you saying "Donald Twump?" Jennifer: Yeah, Mike. We're Elmer Fudding it. Elmer Fudd was a cartoon character who is best known for appearing in Warner Bros. cartoons with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. He had a speech impediment which caused him to pronounce R's as W's. Example: "Shh. I'm hunting wabbit."

    • David Wain: Prince Machiavelli himself couldn't have orchestrated a more murderous coup! [Wain refers here to Florentine statesman and forerunner of modern politics Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527). He himself was not a prince, but rather is famous for writing "The Prince", which is considered his greatest work and ushered in a new style of politics.]

    • David Wain: I just made an educated guess. I'm a Harvard man. Harvard is a private university in Cambridge, Mass. Harvard is famed for its high academic standards and is probably the most famous of the Ivy League schools.

    • The bottles filled with urine seen in the trio's apartment after their week-long cowardly isolation is a reference to the storied insanity of Howard Hughes, who did the same during his long seclusion made famous in the movie The Aviator.

    • (At the college graduation ceremony) Older Kevin: Go Badgers! This is in reference to the Wisconsin Badgers. Topher Grace (Older Kevin) plays Eric Forman in That 70's Show, who lives in Wisconsin and attends the university referenced.

    • When David Wain wipes off his blackface makeup, a star over his right eye remains. This is a reference to the makeup of KISS co-founder Paul Stanley.

    • Amy: Oh my God... Is that blackface? Blackface is an American style of theatre makeup that began in the late 18th century and was a mainstay for over 100 years. It is now considered an archaic icon of racism in this country.

  • Derrrp. We're so funny in our over-acting and zany situations!! It sounds exactly like a high school improv. group-- just terrible. Eccentric DOES NOT equal funny. Stella just applies it in all the wrong ways.
