  • show Description
  • Sugar Rush explores the world of Kim and her earth-shattering lust for the gorgeous and sassy Maria Sweet, otherwise known as Sugar. And if Sugar wasn't enough to blow Kim's mind, there's also her dysfunctional, embarrassing family - a mini-freak for a brother, an obsessively house-proud dad and a mum who's behaving as if she's the one who's 15 years old. Each episode is a different journey inside Kim's world as her wry observations take us into the mind of a screwed up, loved up, lustful adolescent experiencing the bright lights of Brighton and the rush of forbidden love for the first time.moreless

    • Sugar: Jesus swiped it for me, the little prick. Kim: Jesus? Sugar: Yeah, Jesus. My brother Jesus. My mom's a Catholic. Got a problem?

    • Kim: (Voice over) Okay, so it's the 21st century. And a 15 year-old using a toothbrush to masturbate about her best friend really shouldn't be that big a deal.

    • Kim: It was the first day of the rest of my life. I was no longer going to be shat on.

    • Tom: Had her. And her girlfriend.

    • Beth: Sugar – a short term fix, sends your heart rocketing then rots your teeth.

    • Beth: (talking about Sugar) She's not worth it, Treacle, Candy Floss, whatever her name is.

    • Saint: (to Kim) So let me get this straight... I can't have my ex over to fix the boiler but you can move yours into your bed?

    • Saint:(on the phone)What are you looking at? Kim:A wreck... Saint:Kim what is in front of you right now? Kim: A wreck, a wreck of loneliness and despair... (faints)

    • Music for this episode; M83 - Teen Angst (also used in trailer and adverts) The Faders - No Sleep Tonight Fatboy Slim - Praise You Estelle - Dance B***h Nouvelle Vague - Teenage Kicks The Undertones - Teenage Kicks The Chemical Brothers - The Big Jump Morrisey - That’s entertainment The Bees - Chicken Payback The Black Velvet - Get On Your Life Basement Jaxx - Bingo Bang Blur - Sweetsong Emiliana Torrini - Today Has Been Ok Sugababes - Nasty Ghetto Parpkasseshow - Like A Virgin

    • It didn’t really make much sense that Kim would be attending such a rough school when her parents were the epitome of middle-class dullness.

    • It managed to be romantic and sweet in a realistic, down-to-earth and rough setting. The lovely postcard shots of Brighton. As with the Doctor Who episode in Cardiff, they appear to be giving Brighton something back for allowing them to film there.

    • Kim’s little brother Matt, who wears a goldfish bowl on his head pretending to be a spaceman, which he does all day every day, even sleeping with the costume on. It caused him problems when he was eating and he made a mashed potato mountain of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind a la Tim from Spaced.

    • Blondie’s classic One Way Or Another was the theme tune.

    • The premise of a gay teenager being in love with their best mate was very well handled, and a lot of it rang true especially the line: “She’s not gay and I don’t want to be”. It was also not forced, and was presented as just another problem in Kim’s life. Teenage gay issues haven’t been dealt with this well on TV since As If. In fact this programme reminded us a lot of As If, which is a real stamp of approval as far as we're concerned.

    • Olivia Hallinan is excellent in the role of Kim. We'd already spotted her talent on childrens TV programmes such as Julia Jekyll And Harriet Hyde and Girls In Love (yes, we watch everything_, so it’s nice to see her progress to adult drama.

    • Kim’s narration was peppered with some excellent soundbites such as “It’s the 21st Century – a 15-year-old using a toothbrush to masturbate over her best friend shouldn’t be that big a deal!”

    • The name of one box is spelled wrong, it says "Bitche's Books." Ironically, Nathan (who named the box) later corrects the spelling mistake (no t) in the same word written by Matt in ketchup.

    • Goof: When Nathan is packing Stella's things, one box says "Whore's hoes", but when the boxes are at Dale you can clearly see it say "Tart's Shoes."

    • Kim and Sugar's playful bitching exchange: "Dyke", "Slapper", "Rug-Muncher", "Slut".

    • Goof: When Kim is masturbating (not more) in her room, in the first take she has her school uniform on, but in the next take (when she throws the toothbrush away) she has the same clothes as on the beach. This might be due to the first episode, when she was masturbating in her school uniform.

    • Before this episode, during the ending credits, all the actors were shown with their characters names. But now, only the guest actors appear, they are listed as "Guest Cast", and thier characters names aren't shown.
