  • This version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles draws more references and plotlines from the original comics than the original television series did. Four turtles are contaminated with "ooze", a radioactive substance that causes four turtles to change into humanoids. Their Master Splinter, a rat whom also came in contact with the ooze, teaches them the art of ninjitusu. Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo are Splinter's disciples who are now ready to take on forces that oppose them, including the Shredder. The Shredder is the Turtles' nemesis, as he killed Splinter's Master Yoshi. The Turtles become envolved in a complex trail of events to uncover just who or what the Shredder really is.moreless

    • Michelangelo: Show me the money, baby! Woo-hoo! Leonardo: This isn't finders, keepers, Mikey. (grabs money from Michelangelo)

    • Raphael: How many of these goons to we have to bat before they get the hint? Michaelangelo: Really, they just keep coming and coming.

    • Mikey: No offence Master Splinter, but this place doesn't seem so great Master Splinter: Look with your heart Michelangelo, and not your eyes Mikey: (rubs head) Umm... ok Master Splinter: And walk this way (Mikey does an impression of Master Splinter and Don whacks him on the head with his bo staff) Mikey: Ow!

    • Mikey: Hey! this is a no parking zone. Here's your ticket (hands PD a slip of paper) And here's your fine! (knocks the PD out with a kick to the head)

    • Purple Dragon: Your going down, freaks! Nobody messes with the Purple Dragons, especially wearin' stupid turtle costumes! Leonardo: He's wrong; we're not wearing costumes.

    • Michelangelo: C'mon, Leo, move it, I don't wanna be starring at your butt any longer than I have to.

    • This episode can be seen on GBA Video TMNT Volume 1.

    • This episode was adapted as issue 3 of the short-lived Dreamwave TMNT comic series. During the laser fight scene the comic writers added the lines "Does he expect us to talk?" "No, Mr Bond, he expects us to die", hence giving reference to the 1964 film Goldfinger.

    • The line "Can we keep her?" was originally from the first live-action Ninja Turtles movie.

    • Like in the first TMNT movie, Raph is the one to meet Casey. and the same situation too but here Casey is beating up Purple Dragons and not foot aspirant.

    • The two police officers sitting in their car in this episode are cartoon-versions of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the co-creators of TMNT.

    • After all Splinter's lectures about not going topside, he doesn't make any comment about the turtles driving up in a vehicle, which they could only have gotten from above ground.

    • Mikey knocks out Two Ton, he's never seen waking up.

    • -First appearance of Dr. Baxter Stockman, who has been restored to his original comic design, he is once more black, and is more composed and self-confident, and also borders on delusions of his own importance. -First appearance of April O'Neil, also restored to her original comic roots, no longer a reporter for Channel 6 as depicted in the original cartoon, but a well-meaning scientist working with Baxter.

    • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) Mikey yells, "Cowabunga!" in this episode and some future ones. This was the turtles' catchphrase in the original series.

    • In the first episode of the original 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, "Turtle Tracks", the Turtles fight a group of thugs with connections to the Foot. Nearly all we see is the thugs getting tossed on a pile. A little while later they fight the Foot Soldiers. In this episode they fight the Purple Dragons (a group of thugs with connections to the Foot) and nearly all we see is the thugs getting tossed on a pile. Shredder also gets angry at the leader of the thugs for failing their objective.

    • Spider-man Michelangelo: Next time, let's leave the wall-crawling to the dude in the blue and red tights. Michelangelo is making a reference the the Marvel Comics superhero Spider-man, a man with spider-like abilities, such as wall-crawling.

    • Star Trek Michelangelo: I need more power, captain! Michelangelo's dialogue, especially with his emphasis on the Scottish accent, is a reference to Scotty from the Star Trek television series.

    • Sewer Names: When Michelangelo and Donatello are thinking up names for their new home, they reference several superhero hideouts. The "Turtle Cave" is a reference to Batman's Bat-Cave, "Sewer of Solitude" is Superman's Fortress of Solitude, and "School for Gifted Reptiles" is the X-Men's "School for Gifted Youngsters". The "Hall of Ninjustice" is a reference to the Justice League's "Hall of Justice."

    • The canister that mutated the turtles from the second movie is TGRI and the canister from this series is TCRI

    • Daredevil The origin story for the ninja turtles where a kid saves a blind man from being run over by a truck with radioactive material, only for some of the waste to fall out and onto somebody which alters them is similar to the origin story of the Marvel superhero Daredevil, who was rendered permanently blind, but had his other four senses of touch, taste, smell, and hearing enhanced to superhuman levels by the waste and he was also trained as a ninja.

    • from Rurouni Kenshin: "Learning from Watching" from the Analysis above
Kenshin Himura of Nabuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin anime and manga series (known as Samurai X in the Western part of the globe) learned most of his major attacks just by watching his master actually do it to him (that's why he is almost always battered whenever he attends lessons). As proof, Master Hiko Seijuro gave the Amakakeryu no Hirameki blow from the Hiten-Mitsurugi Ryu technique to Kenshin without the "attack's blueprint" first. It is possible to learn something without hearing the procedures 1-10 explanation.
