  • show Description
  • The ABC Saturday Superstar Movie was a unique 1 hour Saturday morning cartoon series which ran on ABC from 1972 to 1974. This series was part of a concept by ABC, for the 1972 -1973 season, to make Saturday mornings "primetime for kids" (just like that season's "The Brady Kids"). "The ABC Saturday Superstar Movie" consisted of hour-length animated stories with a different story and cast each week. The head of this series was Hanna-Barbera Productions, who also produced the opening and closing theme songs to the series. This show was the first Saturday morning series to have different stories supplied by different animated studios. Most of the "Movies" were comedy-mysteries and most of them were animated versions of primetime shows such as "Lassie", "That Girl", and "The Brady Kids" (which was also a half hour Saturday morning series that same season). For the 1973 - 1974 season, the name was changed to "The New Saturday Superstar Movie", but only 3 new "Movies" were made (mostly because the price for making one hour cartoon shows at the time was $300,000 per one hour). The List Of Shows And Studos Who Made Them: (1st Season) 1) The Brady Kids On Mysterious Island (Sept. 9, 1972) - Filmation Studios 2) Yogi's Ark Lark (Sept. 16, 1972) - Hanna-Barbera Studios 3) The Mad, Mad Monsters (Sept. 23, 1972) - Rankin/Bass Studios 4) Nanny And The Professor (Sept. 30, 1972) - Fred Calvert Productions 5) Popeye And The Man Who Hated Laughter (Oct. 7, 1972) - King Features Productions 6) Willie Mays And The Say-Hey Kid (Oct. 14, 1972) - Rankin/Bass Studios 7) Oliver And The Artful Dodger (Oct. 21 & 28) (2 part story) - Hanna-Barbera Studios 8) The Adventures Of Robin Hoodnik (Nov. 4, 1972) - Hanna- Barbera Studios 9) Lassie And The Spirit Of Thunder Mountain (Nov. 11, 1972) - Filmation Studios 10) Gidget Makes the Wrong Connection (Nov. 18, 1972) - Hanna-Barbera Studios 11) The Banana Splits In Hocus Pocus Park (Nov. 25, 1972) - Hanna-Barbera Studios 12) Tabitha And Adam And The Clown Family (Dec. 2, 1972) - Hanna-Barbera Studios 13) The Red Baron (Dec. 9, 1972) - Rankin/Bass Studios 14) Daffy Duck And Porky Pig Meet The Groovie Goolies (Dec. 18, 1972) - Filmation Studios 15) Luvcast USA (Jan. 6, 1973) - Depatie-Freleng Studios 16) That Girl In Wonderland (Jan. 13, 1973) - Rankin/Bass Studios (2nd Season) 1) Lost In Space (Sept. 8, 1973) - Hanna-Barbera Studios 2) Nanny And The Professor And The Phantom Of The Circus (Sept. 15, 1973) - Fred Calvert Productions 3) The Mini-Munsters (Oct. 27, 1973) - Universal Television Productionmoreless

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Notes (4)

    • This served as the pilot for the subsequent "Brady Kids" cartoon.

    • This served as the pilot for the subsequent "Yogi's Ark" cartoon. The characters included a human handyman whose first name Noah. Yogi named their flying boat "Noah's Ark" after him, even painting Cap'n Noah's name on the side. The series, however, did not include Noah and his name no longer appeared on the side. Noah's Ark became Yogi's Ark. The moral to this story: A human and talking animals cannot live together after all.

    • Known as "The Freaky Monster Show" in the UK. http://german.imdb.com/title/tt0356848/

    • Part 2 aired on October 28, 1972 of this hour long cartoon series.

  • I thought that I can only get on tilt when playing poker. This movie has the same effect...oddly. This is definitely a pleasant surprise. I will surely look forward to more of The ABC Saturday Superstar Movie from now.
