  • Quotes (2)

    • Billy Crystal: (introducing Robert DeNiro) Our next presenter has been a Godfather, a Taxi Driver, a Raging Bull. All parts my agent turned down for me. (looks irritated)

    • Joe Pesci: (his entire acceptance speech) It's my pleasure, thanks very much.

    Notes (5)

    • The program won 3 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program - Billy Crystal, Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Program and Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program.

    • Dances With Wolves won the most Oscars this year with awards for Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Cinematography, Film Editing and Sound.

    • Just before the final nominations were announced, the Academy Board of Governor's made the decision this year to forgo the usual contest for Best Visual Effects because they felt that the work done for Total Recall was of such a high order that it deserved to be singled out with a special award. The runners-up were Back to the Future Part III, Dick Tracy, and Ghost but they were not official nominees.

    • Before Martin Short and Chevy Chase could hand out the award for Best Live Action Short Film, a man began shouting a protest from the audience. Security apprehended the man but the home audience never saw any of this. The only evidence from the show was that Short looked in that direction before getting to the business at hand.

    • Meryl Streep, who was nominated for Postcards From the Edge, did not attend the show on orders from her obstetrician. To date this is the only time she was ever nominated and did not attend.

    Trivia (6)

    • This is the first time a Western - themed movie has won the Oscar for Best Picture since 1930.

    • Reba McEntire, who sang the nominated song "I'm Checkin' Out" from Postcards From the Edge, was a replacement for Meryl Streep who was supposed to perform the song. She could not attend the ceremony on orders of her obstetrician.

    • Before Annette Bening presented the Oscar for Costume Design, she was introduced by host Billy Crystal as "coming soon as none other than Catwoman in Batman II". However Bening dropped out of the role a few weeks later due to her pregnancy and the role went to Michelle Pfeiffer.

    • All four of the acting winners played criminals of one sort or the other. Jeremy Irons played Claus Von Bulow who poisons his wife in Reversal of Fortune. Kathy Bates plays a psychotic nurse who turns to murder in Misery. Joe Pesci plays a gun-happy mobster in Goodfellas. Whoopi Goldberg plays a crooked psychic in Ghost.

    • GOOF: In his opening remarks Academy President Karl Malden recalled that "in 1981, Thomas Edison put his patent application on his movie picture camera". What he meant to say was 1891.
