    • Jon Stewart: (referring to all of the dark, violent films that are up for nominations) Does this town need a hug?

    Notes (3)

    • Louis J. Horvitz, who directed this episode, won Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music Or Comedy Program in the 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards. It also won an another Emmy Award for Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Music or Nonfiction Programming.

    • At age eighty-six, Hal Holbrook is the oldest man ever to be nominated for an Oscar. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Into the Wild.

    • An ongoing writers strike nearly stopped The 80th Annual Academy Awards. In December, The Writer's Guild went on strike, protesting that much of their work was being sold on DVD and for internet download without residuals going to the writers themselves. The strike lasted four months and in it's wake turned the Golden Globes from a star-studded three-hour event into a 30 minute show with two hosts naming off the winners. On the morning of the nominations, the question of whether or not the ceremony would take place depended upon the settling of the strike because no one wanted to cross the picket line to work on the show. Two weeks prior to the big night, it was finally settled and the event went on as planned.

    Trivia (3)

    • All four acting winners were not American (Tilda Swinton and Daniel Day-Lewis are British, Javier Bardem is Spanish and Marion Cotillard is French), this is the first time this has occurred since 1965.

    • Sound technician Kevin O'Connell earned his 20th nomination (Sound Mixing - Transformers) but has yet to win an Oscar, making him the person with the most nominations without an award.
