  • Episode Description
  • When the awful sound coming from the Mayberry choir is narrowed down to Barney, the members decide they must get rid of him. Since no one has the heart to do it, they set him up telling him he is singing into a supersensitive microphone, while someone else is actually singing the part back stage.

    • "WELCOME SWEET SPRINGTIME" (a.k.a. "Good ole 14-A") Welcome sweet springtime, We greet thee in song, Mummers of gladness, Fall on the ear. Voices long hushed, Now hear full notes, prolong, Echoing far and near. {CHORUS} Sunshine awaits for, The flower that's from seed, Joy giving incense, Fall on the air. Snowdrops and primrose, Both timidly beam, Hailing the glad new year. {BARN} Balmy in life, Breathing breezes are blowing, Swiftly to nature, New vigor's bestowing. Oh, how my heart beats, With rapture anew, Earth's flower in beauty, Again feeds my view. {CHORUS} Sunshine awaits for, The flower that's from seed, Joy giving incense, Fall on the air. {BARN} Snowdrops and primrose, Both timidly beam, Hailing the glad new year.

    • (Thelma Lou hears that Barney is going to join the choir) Thelma Lou: Barney's going to be in the choir? My Barney? Andy: That's right. Thelma Lou: But Barney can't sing. Andy: I know. Thelma Lou: He's a warm, wonderful person and I love him dearly; but he can't sing. Andy: That's true. Thelma Lou: He's kind, considerate, good-hearted - the most gentle person I've ever known; but he can't sing. Andy: You're right. Thelma Lou: He's the man I want to marry - the man I want to be the father of my children... Andy: But he can't sing. Thelma Lou: Not a lick!

    Notes (2)

    • Despite Barney's tone deaf singing voice in this particular episode, in most instances Barney actually seems to have a decent voice, even harmonizing with Andy on a number of occasions.

    • The is the first appearance of John Masters, Mayberry Choir Director (and part time hotel clerk).
