  • Notes (3)

    • This was Alan Melvin's final appearance in the series. Melvin typically played convicts, criminals, or heavy, bully types. However, on two occasions he played good guys: "Ernest T. Joins the Army" he plays an Army recruiter and in "Trip to Raleigh" he plays a hotel detective.

    • This episode follows the same basic storyline as season two's "Opie and the Bully." Andy even makes a reference to the advice he gave Opie back then, the punch you've been so scared of really isn't anything to be scared of at all. Although Opie got hit, Howard managed to avoid the conflict by calling his opponents bluff. Interestingly enough, Barney would face the same issue as well in the episode "Barney's Uniform" but with very different results.

    • This episode marks Millie Hutchin's first appearance in the series. She and Howard would get serious enough to consider marriage a few episodes later only to get cold feet when they were nearly at the altar! She would not appear again in The Andy Griffith Show. Though it's never stated, it seems that she and Howard eventually brok up for good because she would make regular appearances in Mayberry RFD as Sam's girlfriend.

    Trivia (1)

    • The epilogue had Howard coming to Millie's defense again. A persistent customer was hitting on her. His response to Howard's showing of fists was to hit him in the stomach. Andy let the guy go. Why didn't he arrest him? This guy threw the only punch. He was definitely guilty of harassment and assault.
