  • Notes (6)

    • Although Andy is the only character to appear in every episode of The Andy Griffith Show, a number of characters would continue in the spin-off series, Mayberry RFD and it would ultimately be the character of Goober Pyle who would log the most TV air time of any of the characters. Between, The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD, and Hee-Haw Goober would remain on first run television for 28 years! Hee-Haw was canceled in 1992.

    • With this episode Andy Griffith became the only cast member to appear in all 249 episodes of the series. In second place is Ron Howard who appeared in 210 episodes and in third place, Frances Bavier, who appeared in 175 episodes.

    • When The Andy Griffith Show ended it was the #1 rated show on television.  To this date, it is one of only three shows to end on top, the other two being I Love Lucy and Seinfeld.

    • This episode served as the pilot episode for the spin-off Mayberry RFD yet the set up for the potential series (the "situation" of the situation comedy) involved a family of immigrants coming to live in Mayberry. Sam (who had already made several appearances in the series during the final season) would take over for Andy as the town patriarch and friend to these new characters. However, when RFD premiered during the following television season the immigrant family angle was dropped (as were the immigrants) and RFD pretty much became a continuation of the original Andy Griffith Show without Andy Griffith.

    • The Repeats from April 8 to September 16, 1968 except CBS-TV coverage of "Campaign '68" for "THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION" & "THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION". On Monday September 16, 1968, "THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW" canceled on CBS-TV. On Monday September 23, 1968, "MAYBERRY R.F.D." debuts on CBS-TV.

    Trivia (2)

    • In this episode. Sam, is standing in front of his barn. A White Barn. Yet, in the previous episode #248 (A girl for Goober).Goober, tells his computer date, about his painting skills. He says, a Red Barn is a Red Barn. I just painted Sam's last summer.

    • Sam's friend arrives on a Union Pacific train, even though Union Pacific goes nowhere near North Carolina.

    Allusions (1)

    • The R.F.D. in the title of this episode (which would become the title of new spin-off series) stands for Rural Free Delivery. Rural Mail Delivery began on October 1st, 1891 to determine the viability of Rural Free Delivery (RFD). Formerly, residents of rural areas traveled to the Post office to pick up their mail or pay for delivery by a private carrier. Why this designation was used for this episode and the series that followed has never been revealed.
