  • Quotes (3)

    • (Opie's helping Thelma Lou bake brownies at her house; when Barney calls, Opie picks up the phone) Barney: (thinks it's Thelma Lou) Hi, pussycat. Opie: Oh, hi, Barney. Barney: (annoyed) You still there, Ope? Let me speak to Thelma Lou. Opie: (to Thelma Lou) He wants to speak to you. Thelma Lou: Ask him what he wants. Opie: What do you want, Barney? Barney: Well, ask her if she wants to go for a little ride tonight. Opie: You goin' ridin' tonight, Barney? Barney: Ask her. Ask her. Opie: (to Thelma Lou) Would you like to go for a ride tonight? Thelma Lou: It might be fun. Where to? Opie: Where to, Barn? Barney: Well, nowhere in particular. Just around. Opie: You mean around in circles? Barney: Anywhere! The duck pond. Opie: Why go to the duck pond at night? You won't be able to see the ducks. (Thelma Lou, overhearing, is amused) Barney: You shouldn't be doin' this. This is a person-to-person call. It's as bad as openin' somebody else's mail. Now let me speak to Thelma Lou! Opie: (to Thelma Lou) He really wants to speak to you. Thelma Lou: You're doin' fine. Ask him again WHY he wants to go to the duck pond. Opie: Barney, why do you wanna go to the duck pond? Barney: Oh, never mind. (hangs up)

    • (Barney & Andy are at the courthouse) Barney: Well, I think I'll call Thelma Lou up. Invite her to go for a little ride tonight. Gonna be a moon. Maybe we'll just go up to the duck pond and park. Andy: Little smoochin' party, huh? Barney: Well, "Que sera, sera"...

    • Barney: I wish you'd explain to your boy that youngsters shouldn't be allowed to interfere with grownups. Andy: I'll try, but I might not have time. Barney: What d'ya mean? Andy: I might be too busy tryin' to explain to him why you wanna go to the duck pond.

    Notes (2)

    • Barney's age is given as 35 years old by Andy.

    • TV TOME "Notes" for BETTY LYNN has this... One of the big questions in her acting life is: WHY DOES BARNEY WANT TO TAKE THELMA LOU UP TO THE DUCK POND? Opie's right, "It's dark and you won't be able to see the ducks!" This is the episode that features that quote.

    Allusions (2)

    • This episode was the inspiration for retro country group BR-549's Me and Opie at the Duck Pond.

    • Barney: "Que sera, sera."
The phrase means "Whatever will be, will be." It is best known – and Barney would know it – from the song, "Que Sera, Sera". The song, from the 1956 Hitchcock film, "The Man Who Knew Too Much", was that year's Academy Award winner for Best Song.
