Gomer reveals his magnificent voice!
This is such a well written episode--and Don Knotts does a splendid job of showing us Barney's Fife hidden desire to sing--even though he really can't. Much to his chagrin, Gomer is picked as the tenor for the choir, when it is revealed that Gomer has an amazing voice. Hearing "Gomer" sing for the first time, reveals just how special he is; this episode is important on many levels, but certainly the development of the Gomer character assumes a multi-level complexity. In addition his sensitivity to Barney's feeling further endears him to us, and we see that despite his simplicity he really does have quite a bit of depth. The expression "don't judge a book by its cover" truly fits the revealing nature of this episode.moreless
