The Beat is the Current TV series that documents the workings of the police force in Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, British Columbia. Current TV was created in 2005 by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and businessman Joel Hyatt. Current TV began with a unique style of programming, with "pods", short programs which were often created by viewers. Users submitted short pods on a variety of subject matter, and Current's website offered voting to see which would make it on-air. In 2009, Current changed to offer more traditional programming, switching from short pods to 30 minute block programming, though some elements still remain. Their series The Beat takes a look at one of the toughest urban areas, and the cops that try to keep it under control. Vancouver has been described by The United Nations as a "paradise, blighted by a two-kilometer square stretch of urban misery", and that stretch is where these police and on their beat. Over six months, the Current cameras followed the work of the Beat Enforcement Team, the special police squad that patrols the dangerous and drug infested zone. The cops work to clean up the streets and improve the lives of the community, while juggling their home and personal lives on the Current TV documentary series The Beat.moreless
