A royal swindle takes Stockton.
Prince Ranjit from India arrives in Stockton with his American escort, Captain Crawford. But neither is whom they seem to be. The Prince is nothing more than a pauper, saved from starvation in Calcutta by Crawford, not out of Christian compassion, but because he could serve the "captain" in his confidence scheme, collecting money from the wealthy for the starving children of India. The money, all of it, goes into Crawford's own pocket. When a woman, a former prostitute or saloon girl (if memory serves me; it's been years since I've seen it), recognizes him, he goes to her hotel room at night and murders her to keep her quiet. Heath sees him running from the hotel, and Crawford becomes a suspect. Meanwhile the Prince and Laura (played by Cathy Garver, Cissy from "Family Affair"), a girl left in Jarrod's care, fall in love, against Jarrod's objections. When the heat starts to come down, Crawford and Ranjit have to leave. Before doing so, they visit Laura to steal her valuable jewelry. Crawford wants to take her as a hostage, leaving the "prince" no choice but to fight the nefarious man who years earlier had saved him from starvation.moreless
