  • show Description
  • The Collector is a supernatural drama, in the tradition of Rod Serling's original Twilight Zone, about a man who collects souls for the Devil. MORGAN PYM appears to be in his mid 30's, but was in fact born in 1322 AD, in Nuremberg. In his native land, he was a monk who had the misfortune to fall in love with a servant girl (KATRINA), who lived near the monastery…and to reveal his love to her just before she came down with the plague. Enraged at God, he sold his soul to the Devil in return for 10 years of happiness with Katrina, which he received. But at the end of that time, Katrina became ill again and died; enraged, Morgan fought back against the Devil, and was offered a deal: he could escape the trip to Hell if he agrees to collect souls from others who have dealt with the Devil. As long as he does that, he'll continue to walk the earth, immortal, but the moment he stops, the deal ends. Miserable, lost, alone, Morgan took the deal, but didn't have courage enough to ask where Katrina's soul had gone.Six centuries later, that still torments him, but he has tried to bury it in the mindless routine of a Collector's lonely existence: no sleep, no friends, just one call a week with a name of someone in the city of Vancouver. (The Devil has Collectors in every city in the world.) Morgan's simple task: to find the person, and let them know they have 48 hours until their ten years is up, then hang around until the moment comes to suck their soul down to Hell. Why the early warning? The Devil enjoys a good laugh, and watching people squirm for the last 48 hours is one of his great pleasures. But in our first episode, something happens: Morgan meets a pretty young junkie named MAYA, who brings up all of his loss over Katrina, and his existence finally becomes intolerable. He goes to the Devil, but doesn't end his deal – instead, he renegotiates for the power to help his "clients" seek redemption in the last 48 hours of their existence. (The Devil's deals work by reapportioning Luck; the client gets 10 years of good luck, but the balancing bad luck goes elsewhere – to another person, a group of people, society, etc. To seek redemption, a client must take on the painful and nearly hopeless task of redressing this bad luck in their last 48 hours.) The Devil, intrigued by having a wild card in his otherwise predictable omnipotent existence, agrees to Morgan's request. Not all of Morgan's clients will choose to seek redemption; of the ones that do, many will fail. As for those who achieve redemption, some will deserve and it and some won't; and sometimes evil people will get off easy – again, the Devil's sense of cruel irony always dominates the stories. The tone of the shows vary from serious to darkly comedic, according to the client of the week and the specific good luck they chose: stories may involve crime, family issues, science fact – any area of human endeavor imaginable. But regardless of the subject matter, Morgan's fundamental drive will always be to prove that everyone, no matter what they've done, can earn redemption…and that, perhaps, that may someday include himself. The Collector will begin its third season early 2006 on Space and CityTV. A fourth season is already in development.moreless

    Notes (49)

    • This episode won Leo Awards for Best Overall Sound in a Dramatic Series, Best Musical Score in a Dramatic Series and Best Visual Effects in a Dramatic Series.

    • The original premise of The Collector was that Morgan would be a Collector of evil people only, and be a sort of avenger. However, this seemed to dark, and Jon Cooksey and Ali Marie Matheson wanted the show to have more meaning, so the plotline was changed.

    • Morgan says that if Dion kills himself it will only make things worse for him in hell. This seems to indicate that in the world of the Collector suicide is considered to be a mortal sin.

    • Ona Grauer, who portrays Katrina, has also been in FOX's Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction and John Doe. She has also guest-starred in Sci Fi's Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, and was in the 2004 movie Catwoman.

    • When Adrian Holmes was recording the song that his character performs in the episode, he didn't sound natural at all because he's nothing like his character in real life. He was told to take on an attitude similar to that of his character, and he nailed it immediately, even though he's not a professional singer.

    • Mackenzie Gray was a recurring guest star on Jon Cooksey and Ali Marie Matheson's last series, So Weird.

    • Maya reveals to Morgan that she was the top of her class in high school. She took advanced classes, was well-read, and was even a cheerleader.

    • Actor Blu Mankuma is also known for his work in a Disney Channel Original movie, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, which was written by Jon Cooksey and Ali Marie Matheson.

    Trivia (14)

    • It is revealed in a future episode that any client can see the portal, whether or not they have been redeemed, if so then Isabelle should be able to see the portal.

    • Wouldn't it be that if Van Sant's father sold his soul so that the devil would barter with his daughter, he would go to hell first instead of second? The devil switched the pronouns around in an attempt for the daughter to feel guilty but in reality the father wanted the deal but the devil needed the daughter's permission in order for the deal to take effect because she was the beneficiary. Therefore both their deals started at the same time.

    • Alicia moves her consciousness from her own body to the replicant. Shouldn't the soul either remain in the original body, or move as well, and therefore be possible to collect?

    • Near the end it is possible to see how the replicant's chest moves, as if breathing. Does a robot need to breathe?

    • The song "Ring Around Rosie" is a nursery rhyme popularly believed to be from the time of the Bubonic Plague/Black Death, which reached Europe in 1347 and is what caused Katrina's death. However scholars agree that this is an urban legend since the rhyme first appeared in print during the Victorian era in England (1881) and the tune itself existed no earlier than 1790. Another popular specious provenance is that instead of the Black Death, it referred to the Great Plague of London of 1665, but this too is incorrect. Most of the "fakelore" associated with this nursery rhyme is attributed to the folklorists Peter and Iona Opie, who in 1951 first published their hypothesis that this nursery rhyme was associated with the plague in 'The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes', a source that continues to be cited to this day despite being fallacious.

    • Jason Gray-Stanford is also best known in his role as "Randy Disher" from the series Monk.

    • Mentioned in the episode are, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes. Jack the Rippers second, third and fourth victim.

    • The time stated at the start is Sunday, 30th September, 1883, 1:30 am. The victim Morgan finds is Catherine Eddowes. Catherine Eddows was killed by Jack the Ripper, and found at roughly 1:45 am, Sunday, 30 Sept, 1888.
