    • Torriti: (of Lili) Listen to me, McAuliffe, you can woo her, you can screw her. You can do whatever you need to do to make her whisper sweet secrets in your ear, but don't fall in love with her. That way lies madness.

    • Lili: How did you get here, Jack, doing this kind of work? And not the suave Jack answer, the real answer! Jack: There are some Americans who understand that we are in a life and death crisis with the communists. When it's over, only one side will survive; I've been asked to join the battle. Lili: And you believe this? Jack: We're in a war, Lili, and even though it is a cold one, it is no less deadly.

    • Azalia: (of Yevgeny leaving) I should be very upset, Yevgeny. Every time you call me on the telephone, my heart races. I can feel it in your voice… the longing in your words. Yevgeny: That's because every time I leave you, a part of my soul stays in your possession.

    • Starik: I have been told by my people that the Pentagon thinks there will be a war with the Soviet Union. They even have predicted a starting date. Yevgeny: America doesn't have the appetite for another World War, let alone an atomic one. I mean, they are foolish and greedy, yes, but not insane. Americans are very good at self-preservation.

    • Frank Wisner: (at orientation) The Truman Doctrine of 1947 promised that America would aid free peoples everywhere in the struggle against totalitarianism. The principal instrument of American foreign policy in that struggle is the Central Intelligence Agency. Make no mistake about it, western civilization is under attack. It is a war of attrition, and a very thin line of patriots mans the ramparts.

    Allusions (2)

    • Woman: "How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the cat, "or you wouldn't have come here." This is a quote from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, chapter six, wherein Alice attempts a conversation with a disappearing Cheshire cat.

    • Harold Adrian Russell "Kim" Philby Although surrounded by fictional characters, Adrian Philby is loosely based on the MI6 intelligence agent who was part of the Cambridge Five. His dismissal from the British Embassy in America was not for being a mole, but for bad behavior. He was never officially caught, but defected to the Soviet Union in 1963 just before another interrogation, and died there in 1988.
