Fiddler on the Ropes

Trivia, Quotes, Notes and Allusions

Quotes (7)

  • Rose: I still feel guilty about going through Pepe's things. Blanche: Me too. Although it was kind of exciting opening his closet and seeing his little boxing trunks hanging there with that provocative nickname on 'em. Dorothy: Blanche, Everlast is a brand name, not a nickname.

  • Sophia: Remember Pepe, there are 3 rules in boxing. Rule 1, cover your face, rule 2, keep your head down, and rule 3, always keep moving. Incidentally those same rules apply if you ever eat at a clam bar in Little Italy.

  • Rose: I think I might be able to help Pepe too. Sophia: Yeah, you can be a constant reminder of what happens if you spar without head gear.

  • Sophia: Okay Pepe, left, jab jab, left jab. Dorothy: Ma, will you cut it out? You don't know anything about boxing. Sophia: Please, I used to be considered the Don King of Sicily, of course I wore my hair differently back then.

  • Dorothy: After that, it's adios Pepe. (Pepe opens the door to leave) Sophia: No no, Pepe, get back here and boom boom!

  • Dorothy: Stan used to have to get naked to count to 21.

  • Sophia: Boom Boom. Pepe: Kill Gonzalez!

Notes (1)

  • This is not the last time we will see Chick Vennera.  While he played Pepe in this episode, in "Rose Fights Back" and All That Jazz", he plays "Enrique Mas", Rose's boss at the television station.

Allusions (2)

  • Pepe's "Hath not a Cuban eyes? Hath not a Cuban hands..." speech is a reference to Shylock's speech from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, which was actually in defense of Jews.

  • The title of this episode is a take-off of the Broadway musical "Fiddler on the Roof", which, incidentally, Bea Arthur was a member of the original cast.
