    • Rose: If you ask me Blanche, your Uncle Lucas is nothing but desperate, pathetic, and lonely. Dorothy: Right. Rose: Hey, Dorothy, you two just might hit it off!

    • Rose: If anyone should have the right to complain, it should be me! Let me explain: Blanche is related to Lucas in blood, now Dorothy's going to marry him, while Sophia will be an in-law. Everybody will be related to each other, except me. Sophia: That's family planning for ya!

    • Dorothy: (holding up a crab) Look at this one. It's shriveled up little frown reminds me of my mother. (takes the mallet and hammers its leg off)

    • Lucas: (to Dorothy) These past three days have been the lightest and brightest since Edna died.

    • Sophia: Ingrid Bergman had Paris, my Pussycat has crabs.

    Notes (7)

    • Leslie Nielson is best known as Frank Drebin in the 1982 short lived TV series Police Squad, and the Naked Gun movies.

    • By season's end and due most likely to a quick change in timeslot from the comfortabale 9pm slot to 8pm, the show dipped to #30 amongst all primetime TV shows.

    • According to sources, at this point, Estelle Getty had begun her early stages of dementia. If you look closely when the girls are on the couch and Dorothy is telling them of her date, Estelle appears to be caught off guard when the camera comes back to her. Her eyes appear to be looking at cue cards for her next line.

    • Rue McClanahan (Blanche Devereaux) and Leslie Nielsen (Lucas Hollingsworth) both played murder victims of a character played by Patrick McGoohan in different episodes of Columbo: Clanahan in "Ashes to Ashes", Nielsen in "Identity Crisis".

    • Bea Arthur is the reason why The Golden Girls came to its close despite it's good ratings. She decided she didn't want to play Dorothy any longer. However, the other girls wanted to keep going so that is why The Golden Palace was created.

    Trivia (1)

    • Again, where is Miles? Rose is about ready to move in with her daughter Kirsten to be the 'Sophia' of her household all the while ignoring the fact that she and Miles were still very close just a few episodes back.

    Allusions (3)

    • When Sophia rings a triangle. alerting the family that it's time to eat, Dorothy cracks a line about Hop Sing, an allusion to the hit western Bonanza that featured a beloved cook named Hop Sing who summoned the Cartrights to meals the same way.

    • Sophia's reference to Ingrid Bergman having Paris while her daughter had crabs is an illusion to the Humphrey Bogart epic Casablanca, one of the most memorable lines in cinema history

    • The title is a pun on the Ken Kesey novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson.
