Trivia, Quotes, Notes and Allusions

Quotes (8)

  • Dorothy (at the library): My mother talked her into getting her the new Stephen King. Librarian: Well, we do have the one that came out last Tuesday. Dorothy: Well, as long as it's not about some little creature who finds new and inventive ways of terrorizing a household. It's for my mother. I don't want to give her any ideas.

  • Rose: (Referring to Dreyfuss and his puppies) You like having them over, too. Don't you Sophia? Sophia: Yeah, I like 'em. Dorothy: That's because it temporarily shifts the blame if we find a puddle on the floor. Sophia: Once, Nurse Ratchet, once.

  • Sophia: Well, mercy me. Looks like my little Magnolia just turned into a big ho.

  • Blanche: When Blanche Devereaux wants a man she does not stand on ceremony. Sophia: Or the floor.

  • Ted:(to Sophia) That southern accent of your's really comes and goes. Sophia: Grits, alright.

  • Blanche: I certainly did grow up around some pretty ignorant people. Do you know what horrible thing the folks in my neck of the woods did once when I was a youngin'? Dorothy: You mean besides using phrases like "neck of the woods" and "youngin'"? Blanche: They burned books. The townspeople made a big pile of em' out in front of the library and they threw a torch on top, only Big Daddy was outraged. He fought his way through that crowd, clawed his way to the top of that pile, grabbed that lit torch, and turned to that crowd and said: "What are you people doin'? This is lunacy! You start a fire from the bottom!"

  • Blanche: Grammy here brought me up since I was a child. She's the one who taught me how to put up peach preserves and and make my own clothes. Sophia: We was po'.

  • Sophia: Look who's not po'.

Notes (4)

  • Notice at the very end after Blanche delivers the final line and heads down the hall to her bedroom, she opens the door, but nothing is there. This is because there were no scenes in there, and there was no point to build the set when you were only going to barely see into the room. All you see are beige walls.

  • This episode was the 137th episode taped but aired as the 139th episode.

  • Here's a little interesting information. Sophia tells Dorothy they'll be late for Temple, and Dorothy has to remind her that they're Catholic. In real life, Estelle Getty is actually Jewish.

  • Dreyfuss the dog crosses over from the spin-off series, Empty Nest.

Trivia (1)

  • Sophia would once again do her southern routine in the series finale when she comes into the living room to talk about what's for dinner.

Allusions (4)

  • Sophia: "Once, Nurse Ratched, once." Mildred Ratched was the strict, emotionless and overall nightmare of a nurse from the book and movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".

  • Blanche: So many books! Dorothy: That's why they call it a library! It comes from the Latin Librarius, which means, 'So many books'! This is almost identical to a quote in an earlier Golden Girls episode, "Sisters and Other Strangers." Magda also exclaims, "So many books!" and Dorothy replies, "That's why they call it a bookstore!"

  • "Stand By Your Man" is a classic country anthem made popular by the late Tammye Wynette.

  • In one scene, Dorothy makes a reference to Stephen King. Stephen King is a great literary figure and master of the horror novel with such hits as Carrie, The Shining, and Pet Sematary.
