  • Episode Description
  • Jack is sweeping the set; he explains that anything he saves he can keep. He has Mary running the spotlight and Bob Crosby building sets. During his monologue on his movie career, a girl cartwheels across the stage; Jack says he promised the girl's father he'd get her TV work. She turns up again during the later sketch. Bob Crosby sings "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine." The long anticipated parody on Gaslight (called Autolight) premieres. Jack is the hateful husband who tries to drive his wife, Barbara Stanwyck, insane with shenanigans like turning pictures upside down and telling her that she did it.moreless

    • This episode was filmed 6/11/1953.

    • The Gaslight spoof that airs during this show was filmed in 1953. MGM sued, not over the content of the satire itself, but over the fact that it filmed. Jack had done a satire of the film before on his radio program and on a live TV episode. But, in 1953, the movie studios were so panicked over TV's popularity and its effect on their business, they weren't going to let TV film one of their films; the studio took the matter to court. As MGM won rulings, CBS kept filing appeals. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court in 1958 with the justices deciding nothing (a split 4-4 vote). By this time, MGM was making millions from television and the once critical matter was now pointless. The sketch finally aired, some five years later, in this episode.
