  • Toby Logan is a paramedic who can read people's thoughts. Toby did not manage to know his parents and grew in foster homes. Until now Toby has kept his ability secret and the only one he has shared it with is his old counselor and confidant, Dr. Ray. With the help of Detective Marks and his ex-girlfriend Olivia, an E.R doctor, Toby realizes that his gift can serve to help other people. The show, which contains humorous and tragic elements, follows Toby as he uses his power to solve crimes. The Listener is produced by Program Partners in association with Shaftesbury Films. • Toby (Voiceover): All my life I told myself: turn it off, shut it down, make it go away. Today I broke the rule, I stopped looking the other way and I saw the truth; this isn't a curse … it's a gift.

    • Ray: There's something else. Toby: No. (Ray gives him a look) I have to do something, I might be the only one who can help this woman find her child. Ray: Be careful Toby, no-one can know about you.

    • Ray: So your range is increasing … Toby: It's not what this is about. Ray: No, no, I get it. It scares you. Toby: Yeah, her thoughts took over, I couldn't control it. Ray: But, from the sounds of it you really helped this woman out. You probably saved her life. Toby: It's not the point. Ray: Maybe it is the point, Toby. A cry for help was so intense it broke down the natural barriers between your mind and hers. Toby: Are you saying I'm a human fire alarm?!

    • (Toby saves a girl from a burning car) Oz: I thought for sure it was gonna blow. Toby: It's not a movie Oz, it doesn't happen that way. (BOOM, the car explodes!)

    • Toby (Voiceover): Ever wonder what people are thinking? I don't. I know. The secret isn't hearing people's thoughts, the secret is making it stop. I've been doing both for as long as I remember, way before I ever heard the word "telepath". Still, when God hooks you up with free cable you gotta think He expects you to do a little surfing.

    • (Toby and Oz hanging head first into an overturned car to help a victim) Oz: Toby, we got a problem here. Toby: Yeah, don't tell me you are stuck. Oz: Ok, then I won't mention it. Female Victim: (Opens eyes and looks up): You are kidding, right? Female Victim: (Speaks into radio): It's over, they 're stuck! (Toby with the victim inside the ambulance) Victim: What's going on? Toby: Relax, you're ok, you're in an ambulance. Victim: What happened? Toby: Your apartment blew up. What's your name? Victim: Vince Toby: My name is Toby. My partner is the best driver in the city; we'll get you to the hospital in 10 minutes. (Ambulance rocks, tires screech) Toby: Ok, make that five. Vince: Oh man, I don't believe this. Toby: It's not as bad as it looks. Vince: No man, you cut my favorite shirt! Toby: (Smiling) I'll get you a new one, I promise.

    • Oz: (as he treats Elizabeth, a woman with a peanut allergy) Okay, you may experience some sweating, palpitations and nausea. That's okay. Don't worry. I have that effect on most women.

    • Dt. Marks: So, what did he do?
      Toby: Nothing.
Dt. Marks: Okay, so let me get this straight. You got a teenage boy whose first name is Daniel, short, dark hair, who's done nothing?
      Toby: Yeah. You're good.
Dt. Marks: (sarcastically) I tell you what, I'm going to put it on the most wanted list, all right?

    Trivia (19)

    • Oz's family is of Turkish decent.

    • Goof: Towards the end of the episode, before Toby arrives at the storage lockers, we see Donald switching out the key operated padlock with a combination padlock. Earlier in the episode, when Taz shows Toby where to find Ashley, the combination padlock is already on the door.

    • When Toby saves Ashley, he turns the valve of the wet standpipe (fire hydrant) anti-clockwise, which opens the valve, instead of clockwise which closes the valve.

    • In this episode we learn that Toby's favorite band is "The Replacements".

    • At the end of the episode, when the detective is viewing Toby's file, there is a letter with dates and ages that don't match the continuity of the rest of the series. The letter is dated 1990, but mentions property damage occurring in 2005. It also lists Toby as being 15 years old at the time; he is 24 in the present.

    • In the street gang’s hideout, all the pill bottles are the small orange kind that people get when they fill a prescription. However, pharmacies get there pills in bulk bottles and then put them in the smaller ones when someone fills a prescription. The only way they would have those bottles is if they put them in the bottles themselves, which they had no reason to do.

    • Continuity Error - When Oz and Toby are in the shop where Oz is trying on shoes, Oz has put on a ballcap and jacket while he's talking with Toby - and suddenly Oz is back in his EMS uniform again without changing.

    • In this episode Dt. Charlie Marks states that Toby is 28 years old. All other information points to him being 24 years old however.
