    • Rhoda alludes to Helen Gurley Brown when talking about where she gets her ideas. Helen Gurley Brown in 1962 became the best-selling author of Sex and the Single Girl and was Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan for many years, beginning in 1965.

    • Mary tells Lou that she and Rhoda are going to see the new Fellini film. Frederico Fellini is an Academy Award-winning, Italian filmmaker who rose to fame following World War II. His distinctive films often portrayed dreamlike scenes and hallucinations. In the 1970s, Fellini was at his peak in popularity.
