  • show Description
  • On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having "no interest in ordinary humans". She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon a boy who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. Commenting on Haruhi's joining every club in school and then quitting Kyon unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves literally dragged into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade (the SOS Brigade for short). Opening Themes: 1) Koi no Mikuru Densetsu ("Mikuru Legend of Love") 2) Bouken Desho Desho? ("Adventure, Right? Right?") Ending Themes: 1) Hare Hare Yukai ("Sunny Sunny Happy") 2) Bouken Desho Desho? ("Adventure, Right? Right?") (episode 14 only)moreless

    • Kyon: (English version quote; thinking to self) If your mouth gets any closer to her then someone standing off camera is going step into frame and kick your ass, damnit!

    • Kyon: (Narrating) Wait. (Itsuki goes to kiss a sleeping Mikuru) What's this out of the blue? If your face gets any closer, somebody who isn't supposed to be in this scene is gonna walk over and kick your ass! Hey!

    • Mikuru: A bad person threw me into the lake, and... Tsuruya: (Off camera) You're supposed to faint! Mikuru: Oh! (faints)

    • Kyon: (Narrating) Today's work was done. Mikuru could finally remove that sleazy costume and dress in a casual manner. (As Mikuru removes her top, the screen turns blue. We then see her in a t-shirt and shorts) Just to make things clear, no further filming was done of the changing scene. I have no words of comfort to offer your dejected spirits. I'm not lying.

    • (Mikuru faints) Kyon: (Narrating) Normally, one would call an ambulance or ask for help from one of the nearby residents, but this particular boy decided to carry the unconscious innocent girl and where the hell are you taking her, bastard? First of all, where did Yuki and those others disappear to without delivering the final blow? Leaving various mysteries and inconsistencies completely unaddressed, this story has finally reached the midway point. Wait. It's only half over?

    • Haruhi: From East Middle School. Haruhi Suzumiya. I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers here come join me. That is all! Kyon: (In his mind) Are we supposed to laugh?

    • Kyon: (In his mind) Attention everyone. The name of this fledging club has just been decided. Haruhi: SOS Brigade! Kyon: (In his mind) The save the world by overloading it with fun Haruhi Suzumiya's Brigade. Or SOS Brigade for short. Feel free to laugh.

    • Kyon: (Narrating) Thanks to Haruhi Suzumiya... eccentric among eccentrics, my journey through never ending-hell had begun.

    Trivia (5)

    • Explanation of Haruhi's Ribbons: (Posted since this information is not explained in the English dub.) Haruhi's colour choices come from the kanji used within the day names in Japanese. Monday = "Moon" kanji = Yellow Tuesday = "Fire" kanji = Red Wednesday = "Water" kanji = Blue Thursday = "Wood" kanji = Green Friday = "Metal" kanji = Gold Saturday = "Earth" kanji = Light brown Sunday = "Sun" kanji = White This is why Kyon comments he sort of understands what Haruhi is getting at. The numbers are Haruhi's own choice. Kyon probably comments that Monday feels more like a 1 to him because that's when the school week begins. (As a side note, North High School only has Sundays off; they attend on all Saturdays.)

    • If you observe closely, when the SOS Brigade are in the Computer Club President's room, there is a poster of Aya Hirano, Yuko Goto, and Minori Chihara (Haruhi, Mikuru, and Yuki's respective seiyuus) at the side of the bed.

    • Look Closely: During the scene when Taniguchi tries to persuade Kyon and Kunikida to hit on girls with him, Haruhi and Yuki can be seen running in the background for a brief moment, already carrying their instruments. This gives a rough time frame for just when the two were asked to fill in for the missing members.

    • When the group all meets up late at night to discuss the infinite time loop they're stuck in, Mikuru is wearing two different types of shoes.

    • If you have subtitles turned on, the Japanese characters, along with the English characters for the title of the episode, Endless Eight, form an infinity sign.

    Allusions (21)

    • "Mikuru Beam": This attack is possibly an allusion to Dejiko's "Mekara Beam" attack from Di Gi Charat.

    • Mikuru's Speech: Most likely a parody of the speeches given by Sailor Moon.

    • Seiyuu: When Haruhi Suzumiya explains to Kyon why she dragged Mikuru into the club, she holds up two magazines, both with characters from "Shuffle" on the cover. Yuko Goto (Mikuru Asahina) and Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon) were the voices of Kaede and Rin from "Shuffle".

    • Real Life Reference: In the library, Kyon was reading a book when he feel asleep. The book is titled Gakko o Deyou (Escape from School) and is a real book.

    • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: The preview is a parody of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When the Cicadas Cry), a murder/psychological thriller, right down to the single red letter and the scream.

    • Full Metal Panic: Koizumi attacks the cave cricket twice. The first time, he yells "Fumoffu!" The second time, he yells "Second Raid!" Fumoffu and Second Raid are two titles from the anime Full Metal Panic, which, like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, is animated by Kyoto Animation.

    • Sherlock Holmes: When Haruhi says "Elementary, my dear Watson" to Kyon at the end of the episode, it is an allusion to the stereotypical line said by Sherlock Holmes. Dr. John H. Watson was Holmes's assistant.
In the sixty stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes never says this line, but the line did originate from two lines Holmes said: "Elementary" (from "The Crooked Man"), and "It is very superfical, my dear Watson, I assure you" (from "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box"). Actor William Gillette first put the two phrases together in his play, "Sherlock Holmes - A Drama in Four Acts", although it was the actor Basil Rathbone who made the quote as renowned as it is today.

    • Names at the bottom of the screen: Most likely a reference to the mystery anime Detective Conan. The new characters in each episode usually have their names displayed like this along with their age and occupation.
