For Fan's of the Big Bands, Monday and Tuesday night watching The Merv Griffin Show must have brought back some memories and a few tears. Merv played host to some of the people who made the Big Band era. Unfortunately most of the big names have gone. Many are no longer involved in music at all, and many are dead.
The first night Merv had Charlie Barnet, Merv's old boss Freddy Martin, and a number of other names including Helen Forrest. Tuesday night was devoted to Lawrence Welk and others.

A lot of the music which was so familiar to those who lived through and loved the "Big Band Era" could be reproduced from the old arrangements even if the leaders or original band are not around. Anyway, someday somebody will come along with a Big Band type show on television that will click and join Lawrence Welk as top musical television. Merv's first efforts sounded and looked very good.
