  • Episode Description
  • Guest host Alton Brown calls the action as the four finalists must become Iron Chefs. In two battles, each finalist must complete three dishes with the assistance of a surprise sous chef: an eliminated finalist. As two finalists battle, the remaining two must act as floor commentators, demonstrating their knowledge of ingredients, and ability to speak extemporaneously in front of the camera. Judges Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson are joined by Iron Chefs Bobby Flay (also a guest judge) and Cat Cora, who evaluate the contestants dishes.moreless

  • Fan Reviews (3)
  • This twist brought my favorite show into play. I am fan of the original Iron Chef and somewhat of the new show. To use that as a format for an elimination was different and exciting.

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (6)

    • Bob: (When the judges finally reach a decision about who will be eliminated) The is officially the hardest decision we have ever had to make.

    • (Alton Brown quizzes Paul about the San Marzano tomatoes in use during Battle Chicken) Alton: Where are they from? Paul: (Clueless, despite the information on the can) Plummy!

    • Alton: (Surveying Paul and Rory's stations) Looking at the two stations: Paul's station, nice and neat. Rory's station: Texas tornado coming through!

    • Rory: (After AB noted she'd left out some information he needed, in a failed attempt at humor) It's hard to get your attention. You're talking all the time!

    • Jag: (After fluffing his answer to AB's question) I'm not interested in competing with Alton on ingredients. You can't. He's the almanac.

    Notes (4)

    • Challenge #12: Iron Chef Battle Two finalists square off in an Iron Chef battle, supported by a sous chef selected from among the eliminated finalists. Each chef has one hour to prepare three dishes using the secret ingredient, showcasing their culinary point of view. Battle #1: Paul versus Rory Secret Ingredient: Striped Bass Sous Chefs: Adrien (Rory) and Michael (Paul) Battle #2: Amy versus Jag Secret Ingredient: Chicken Sous Chefs: Tommy (Amy) and Colombe (Jag)

    • Challenge #13: Iron Chef Commentary The finalists not engaged in a battle were charged with floor commentary to accompany Alton Brown. This challenge was designed to allow the finalists to show their food knowledge as well as their camera skills.

    • Unlike other episodes, the Iron Chef challenges (commentary/battle) run concurrently, with two finalists doing commentary for the remaining two finalists' battle. The two challenges were given equal weight when evaluating the overall success of the finalists. Winner (combined challenges): Amy

    • Eliminated: Paul

    Trivia (2)

    • During Battle Chicken with Amy and Jag, the burning fat from Jag's chicken set off the smoke alarms. Alton Brown noted that during Iron Chef America they often use theatrical smoke to add atmosphere, but this was the first time they'd had real smoke on the set.

    • The Iron Chef battles take place at the Institute of Culinary Education, a notable school of culinary arts in New York City.
