  • show Description
  • When Ren, a young lighthouse keeper, rescues a stranger foundering in the rocks near his home, he learns the man was his father, the former king of Octopon. Ren is given a magic crystal Compass that guides him to the Thirteen Treasures of Rule. Unfortunately, the evil pirate captain Bloth is also aware of the Treasures and is relentless in pursuing Ren to get them. On his side, Ren soon acquires companions like Ioz the pirate, Tula the Ecomancer, and Niddler the fussy monkey-bird. His quest becomes all the more urgent when Ren learns that the Dark Water, a carnivorous black liquid that consumes anything it snares, threatens to envelop and destroy his world, and only the Treasures he seeks can stop it.moreless

    • Tula: Then north it is! For adventure! Ioz: For treasure! Ren: For Octopan! Niddler: For crying out loud! When do we eat?

    • Konk: Fools, you should have listened to the boy! If you want your king back, you'll have to pay a king's randsom!

    • Ren (as the Maelstrom appears to swallow them): Um, I think we should go South now.

    • Member of Bloth's crew(after a scout ship collision):We're on the starboard, we have the right-of-way!

    • (Konk's ship comes into the harbor too fast.) Konk: Where's the anchor? Lugg Brother #1: You said throw everything we have at Ren!

    • (The crew finds their ship missing back at the docks.) TULA: The Wraith! IOZ: Some thief's stolen her! REN: Takes one to know one, eh, Ioz?

    Allusions (3)

    • Ioz's ire at having Tula aboard the ship is based on an age-old superstition, especially aboard pirate or corsair ships.  The superstition was the women aboard angered any number of dieties.  Often, if a woman were found to be aboard, she would be thrown over to ensure the safety of the ship.

    • The term "panacea" also refers to the panacea of medicine, used most often when referring to the Universal Antidote - a combination of charcoal, magnesium, and tannic acid - which used to be given to people who had consumed poison.  Activated charcoal, found to be more effective,  is used now instead

    • The title of this episode refers to Panacea, the Greek goddess of universal remedy.  She was said to be in possession of a poultice that could cure any illness-not unlike the flower of this episode.
