  • show Description
  • The Secret Service was Gerry Anderson's last puppet series made under the Supermarionation name. The series consisted of 13 episodes and featured actors such as Gary Files, Jeremy Wilkin and David Healy among others who all agreed to continue on from past puppet series such as Captain Scarlet and The Mysterions and Joe 90. The story is about Reverend Stanley Unwin, who was bequeathed an invention created by his scientist friend Professor Humbolt. Called the Minimiser, it fits inside of a book and is able to shrink a person down to two feet tall. An agency named B.I.S.H.O.P (British Intelligence Service Headquarters - Operation Priest) is formed and the Reverend and a fellow agent named Matthew Harding pair up to thwart the evil-doers. The Minimiser is mainly used on Matthew who is shrunk down and transported in a specially designed suitcase which then is left behind at a location where he can do some spying and report to Reverend Unwin.moreless

    • The Captain Ochre puppet from Captain Scaret and the Mysterons appears here as the co-pilot of the ambassador's plane. He would go on to appear in "The Feathered Spies" as pigeon fancier John Masden.

    • British Intelligence head Saunders is named after series production supervisor Desmond Saunders.

    • Healey Automation is named after voice artist David Healy.

    • The office seen at the beginning of the episode was actually Gerry Andersons' office at Lew Grade Studios.

    • Many of the puppets used in Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons and Joe 90 were revamped and used in The Secret Service.

    • The puppet of Agent Blake is the same puppet that played Captain Scarlet in Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons. For the role of Blake, the puppet was given a new wig and a pair of glasses. He would go on to appear in three more episodes. The puppets who played Colonel White and Captain Grey also appear in this episode.

    • Agent Blake drives Sam Loover's car from Joe 90.

    • This is the first time in any Supermarionation series that a puppet interacts with a live animal. In this episode, Matthew encounters Kruger, a Great Dane. In publicity shots for the Thunderbirds episode "Attack of the Alligators"< Lady Penelope was shown surrounded by the creatures, but she was not in that episode.

    Trivia (5)

    • The mini-computer is constantly referred to as the KX20 (because that's how it was in the script), but the machine itself is labelled XK20.

    • How can a Hymek have room for luggage? It's power units are too large to accomodate any extra space for baggage.

    • The engine used is a Hymek locomotive, but the insignia at Bufflers Halt states that the line is managed by the former Southern Railway. This is an error, as the Hymeks were only used on the former Great Western Railway.

    • The newspaper gives the date as February 3rd 1969. At this time of year it unlikely to be sunny, let alone hot enough to cause sunstroke. Indeed, the actual February 3rd 1969 featured snow showers in much of the UK.

    • Father Unwin is seen reading the The Times newspaper, but in close ups it is the Universal News.

    Allusions (1)

    • The overall train plot derives from two previous Gerry Anderson episodes. The first being Supercar's "The Runaway Train", in which a train is on a collision course with a station, and with Thunderbirds' "The Perils of Lady Penelope", where the train to Anderbad is also stopped in a tunnel and it's passengers hijacked.
