  • show Description
  • The Road To Justice Is Twisted The Shield breaks the conventional formula of the cop genre. It plays out in a tough, morally ambiguous world in which the line between good and bad is crossed every day. The series focuses on the tension between a group of corrupt but effective cops and a captain torn between bringing them down and advancing his own political ambitions. The Shield stars Michael Chiklis (The Commish) as rogue cop "Det. Vic Mackey," leader of the elite Strike Team unit, who is effective at eliminating crime but who operates under his own set of rules. Benito Martinez (Outbreak & Her Costly Affair) plays "Captain David Aceveda," the young precinct head who doesn't like Mackey's tactics and wants to bust him off the force. And the Emmy-nominated CCH Pounder (ER & Boycott), plays "Det. Claudette Wyms," a veteran detective who understands Mackey and knows how to play both sides of the fence. The show made history by becoming the first ad-supported cable series to win the 2003 Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series. In its first season, Shawn Ryan (Writing) and Clark Johnson (Directing) received Emmy nominations, which were also firsts for basic cable in those categories. The Shield has received two TCA nominations for Outstanding Achievement in Drama. As of March 2005, the show has become the longest running series on the FX Network.moreless

    • Aceveda: In this building, I'm in charge. Vic: Well, maybe in your mind amigo. But in the real world I don't answer to you. Not today, not tomorrow, not even on Cinco De Mayo.

    • Dutch: Our unsub's disorganized, probably has a record, no history of violence. Claudette: Unsub? Dutch: Unidentified subject. Claudette: You mean the killer. Dutch: Yeah. Claudette: Then just say that!

    • Dutch: (looking at dead body) Christ! You do not see a pair like that everyday. Claudette: It's called rigor. Dutch: Rigor or no rigor, that's a serious rack. Claudette: You wanna give 'em a squeeze? Dutch: How much time we got before the ME shows up?

    • Dutch: Okay, who took my Ding Dongs? Vic: What are you? In kindergarten?

    • Dr. Grady: What's in the bag? (From a brown paper bag, Mackey pulls a bottle of booze, a phone book, keys, a lighter and box cutter. He then lays them on the table in front of Grady.) Dr. Grady: What's that stuff for? Mackey: It's what I'm gonna use to get you to tell me where Jenny Reeborg is. Dr. Grady: Your turn to play bad cop? Mackey: Nah, good cop and bad cop left for the day, I'm a different kinda cop. Dr. Grady: (To the surveillance camera) I'm ready to see my lawyer now.

    • Vic: That's funny. I don't recall having signed up for an ethics lesson from a scumbag defense lawyer.

    • Danny: Where the hell were you last night? Julien: What do you mean? Danny: Detective Crowley got shot. I left you a message. Julien: Yeah, I got it. Danny: So? Julien: didn't say anything about me having to come down. Danny: I shouldn't have to. A fellow officer was dying in that hospital. Julien: I said a pray for him. Danny: A pray? Julien: Yeah! (Danny stares at him) Julien: What? I've been on the job three weeks, I didn't even know that guy. Danny: Rule number one, he was a cop. That means you knew him.

    • (After Julien knocks over a churro stand) Claudette: This is how murderers go free!

    Notes (229)

    • The character of Claudette Wyms was originally supposed to be a man, but a phone call from CCH Pounder's agent convinced creator, Shawn Ryan to change the detective to a woman. At Pounder's request, none of the original dialogue was changed, this was done so that the character would be able to "hold her own" and wouldn't have to "hold back" with her fellow detectives.

    • A scene was deleted where Julian gets a BJ from another guy, revealing that he was gay in the pilot. But the scene was cut so that it would have a bigger build when it took place later int he series. As a result, Julian is the only character not featured in the final musical clips. The deleted clip can be found on the Season 1 DVD.

    • Music heard during this episode: Theme Song: "Just Another Day " by Vivian Romero, Rodney Alejandro, and Ernesto Bautista from an unpublished CD. "Bawitdaba" by Kid Rock from the album, "Devil Without a Cause".

    • Later episodes have flashbacks involving Reed Diamond. In episode 2 there is new material with Reed in the flashbacks.

    • 4.8 million viewers tuned in for the series premiere.

    • This is the final episode for Reed Diamond.

    • Kenneth Johnson joins the cast as Detective Curtis "Lemonhead" Lemansky, while Terry is reduced to a Guest Star role after his death.

    • It was revealed on the Season 1 DVD that this episode was swapped with "Dawg Days" for fear that Shane's character may be cut.

    Trivia (128)

    • When Danny tells her date to wait a moment, she holds up one finger with her left hand. The next camera angle shows her doing it with her right.

    • At 9:08 Danni has a badge with a flag in the middle. At 40:44, the badge is different with a different design.

    • This is one of the first times we see Vic's "Strike Team" trademark card.

    • Several officers keep having the black tape across their badges appear and disappear throughout the episode. Tradition says that they remain on the badge for at least three days, regardless.

    • The scene that follows the "Busted Shield" logo, you'll get to see a goof that made it past the censors. Right after Tripp insults Shane, Shane flips him the bird TWICE! It's so low on camera and so quick that you only see it for 1 second. One of the few times you'll ever see it on basic cable.

    • Mackey and Lem' are at the club where the shooting happened at the begining. When Capt. Acevada shows up he's wearing his badge on the outside of his suit, when he's talking to Mackey it's gone for the entire conversation, then when he's leaving he's wearing it again.

    • The Lincoln Navigator that gets stolen is sometimes reffered to as blue, sometimes as black. Every scene shows it as black.

    • When the cameras take shots of Vic giving the Toros hell, you can see the shadows of the cameras against Vic's face.

    • Serpico This episode is very much like the 1973 movie Serpico, with Al Pacino. Terry Crowley plays the role of the honest cop, determined to bring down corruption within the Police Force. What happens to Terry later in the episode is similar to that of Frank Serpico, but only with a different outcome.

    • Dodger Stadium Was opened in 1962 in Los Angeles, California. The stadium can hold 56,000 fans, and hosted eight World Series games.

    • Matthew: To Infinity And Beyond! The line Matthew shouts as Vic comes out of his flashback is a reference to the character Buzz Lightyear of Toy Story fame.

    • Vic: Hey, did you really do that sneaker commercial in one take? A funny reference to the commercials made by Nike with Michael Jordan where he used to just do the one shot of him floating in the air.

    • Vic: Rumble In The Jungle. Quick reference to the Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman boxing match which they fought in Kinshasa, Zaire in 1974. Ali regained the World Heavyweight title from Foreman, and the match has become one of the most famous in boxing hisotry.

    • Tupac & Biggie It's rumored that the concept for this episode was taken from some of the rap wars between Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.

    • Vic: If I bring the guy in, you'll be the first to know Dutchboy! Dutch Boy Paints was founded in 1907 and is one of the leaders in high quality paint products. The company has changed it's logo seven times since it was founded.

    • Vic: I didn't know we got The Spice Network! When Vic confronts Shane about the sexual tryst with Tulips that he observed on the interrogation room monitor, he mentions The Spice Network, a cable channel featuring porn.
