  • Bart is falsely accused of pulling a prank on Easter involving the school marching band and stuffing rotten eggs in the brass section's horns, and Lisa must step in as his attorney to defend her brother. Meanwhile, Mr. Burns attempts to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a superhero, Fruit Bat Man.

    • The prank call name that Moe used in court to testify against Bart "Mike Rotch" was previously used by Bart as a prank call during the season 2 episode "Blood Feud".

    • The black guy with the eye patch at the end episode is based off of Marvel Comic's Nick Fury as portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the Marvel films. Also the program he activates is a parody of the Avengers Initiative used in those films and the elderly superheroes that appear are parodies of superheroes from both Marvel and DC Comics.

    • The episode title is based off DC Comics' character Batman (since one of his aliases in the comics is the Dark Knight). Additionally the Mr. Burns subplot as Fruit Bat Man is a parody of Batman as well the villains he fights which are parodies of different Batman villains.

    • One of the magazines Mr. Burns sees is The Mulk. This is an allusion to the comic book hero The Hulk.

    • The name of the episode is a parody name to the 2008 movie The Dark Knight, that starred Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.

    • The name of this episode is also aparodyof the 1984 sitcom Night Court, that starred Harry Anderson, Richard Moll, & John Larroquette.
