Homer: Gonna run out the clock in Florida, eh?
      Mrs. Winfield: Yes.

    • Lionel Hutz: Mr. Simpson, this is the most blatant case of false advertising since my case against "The Never-Ending Story"!

    • Homer: Zoo Keeper! Zoo Keeper! Those two monkeys are killing each other! Zoo Keeper: (whispering) There're having sex.

    • Barney: Uh oh, my heart just stopped..... oh, there it goes.

    Notes (5)

    • This was the first episode written by Conan O'Brien.

    • The all-you-can-eat restaurant sidestory was added to the show after a planned sidestory involving a guest shot by Don Rickles fell through due to miscommunication with the Simpsons staff (someone had told them that Don Rickles wanted to do the show, and he didn't.) There was also another planned sidestory, before the restaurant sidestory, that involved Homer becoming a talented barber, but it was rejected.

    • This episode is the last appearance of Sylvia Winfield. (one of The Simpson's neighbors)

    • First Appearence: Captain Horatio McCallister, Ruth Powers

    • Blackboard Joke: I will not bring sheep to class. Couch Gag: The couch falls through the floor with family on board.

    Trivia (3)

    • Items Marge gives Ruth Powers from the Springfield Welcome Mobile include: A potholder from the Potholder Barn, a coupon for a "Free Tattoo with Every Tattoo Removal", and a copy of Das Butt (rated XXX).

    • Sara Gilbert, who provided the voice of Laura Powers, was also playing Darlene Conner on Roseanne at the time.

    • Goof: Bart gives Moe the wrong address. In all following episodes, the Simpsons live at 742 Evergreen Terrace, but in this episode he says they live at 1094 Evergreen Terrace.

    Allusions (6)

    • Das Boot The pornographic film, Das Butt, spoofs Wolfgang Peterson's classic film Das Boot, although there really is a pornographic film call Das Butt directed by Casey and Peter O'Brian.

    • Hutz: Mr. Simpson, this is the most blatant case of fraudulent advertising since my suit against the film "The Neverending Story."
A quick and funny reference to the over-hyped 80's film, The Neverending Story.

    • Episode Title: New Kid On The Block
The episode title is taken from the name of the early 90's boy-band, New Kids On The Block.

    • Homer: Hey, Moose! That means you!
The music being played while the moose eats out of the garbage is a parody of the theme from the show Northern Exposure.

    • Miracle On 34th Street The Sea Captain's lawyer asks to have the amount of shrimp that Homer ate brought into the court. Then several men bring in bags which turn out to have letters to Santa Claus, and one even dumps letters out onto the judge's bench. This whole sequence is straight out of Miracle On 34th Street. The lawyer even tells the men "You want the case of Springfield vs. Kris Kringle, next door."
