    • Jonas: I would not trade you in for any son in this world..... I think you are going to be one hell of a soldier.......Smile.

    • Jonas: (After Betsy loses her grip on a rock face) Want me to come down to get ya? Betsy: No! I can do this. Jonas: Lookit–look, it's hot, you're tired, your knees are rubbed raw… Betsy: Choose! Do you want me to be the best or do you want me to quit? Jonas: Ain't nothin' to be but the best. Betsy: Then coach me, don't coddle me!

    • Jonas: Here, give me your wallet. I saw you take it when you left home. (Betsy slaps it into Jonas's hand) Jonas: Eight miles to the nearest town, Euclid. Know your cardinal points? Betsy: North, east, south, west. Jonas: (Pointing) Alright, due north, two miles, follow this road, then turn to thirty-five degrees the rest of the way. Betsy: Alright, see you there. Jonas: Not likely. I'm going home and that's eighteen miles beyond Euclid. Betsy: How am I supposed to make it all that way with no money? Jonas: I can think of four ways - thieving, hooking, hiking and thinking. See you when you get home.

    • Jonas: I'm going to give you a gift that's taken me twenty-five years to learn. Betsy: I hope it's expensive. Jonas: It's expensive if you don't learn it. I'm going to teach you how to say goodbye to your mother without getting an emotional frying pan upside the head.

    • Jonas: My personal best for fire-starting - 30 seconds. Betsy: Is that how long it took you to shoot and skin a hotdog, too?

    Trivia (2)

    • Goof: Betsy points out the Big Dipper and says the 'pole star' is in it. Jonas says the Big Dipper is below the horizon. As they are in the United States, which is entirely above the Equator, none of these statements are true. The 'pole star' is part of the Little Dipper (Ursa Minor) and the Big Dipper is always above the horizon (not always entirely above though).

    • Goof: Near the end scene where Mack, Hector and the Embassy personnel are in the minefield, mortars are going off around them. Kapp makes a run for it, only to be stopped by Mack. Mack has him by the shirt then gives his speech about him getting someone killed and about his son being brave. The picture cuts and we see the embassy personnel all in a line. In the next scene, we see Mack still holding Kapp by his shirt as the transport vehicle with Marines comes into view.
