    • It was as if a New York audience rose up and cheered an actor from Russia who portrayed Abraham Lincoln with an American cast. This was the reaction of Los Angeles-born basso Jerome Hines date last month to the tumultuous standing ovation and eight curtain calls that followed his opening performance in the title role of "Boris Godunov" at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Voice of Firestone, Sunday night at 10, the Metropolitan Opera basso will make his first appearance in this country since his extensive tour of Russia. On that occasion he will recreate a portion of his triumphant Moscow performance in the Death of Boris scene of "Boris Godunov."
