In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living. Based on a comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, this AMC project focuses on the world after a zombie apocalypse. • B.J.: (over the radio, not knowing that Chase just killed a Walker in the dark) What did I tell you? Easy breezy.

    • Harris: (with a scratch off lottery ticket in his hand) Do you believe this shit. I've been playing my whole life and now I just hit the five grand. (throws it at a dead body) Here ya go.

    • Jaime: (to her younger brother)It's ok baby boy, everything dies. It's God's plan.

    • Dwayne: Daddy can I learn to shoot? I'm old enough.
Morgan: Hell yes you're gonna learn. We gotta do it carefully, teach you to respect the weapon.
Rick: That's right. It's not a toy. You pull the trigger, you have to mean it. Always remember that, Dwayne.

    • Rick: (to Shane) That vase - that's something special. 'Fess up. You steal that from your Grandma Jean's house? I hope you left her that spoon collection.

    • Rick: (to the legless walker) I'm sorry this happened to you.

    • Unknown Speaker: Hey you! Dumb***. Yeah, you in the tank. You cozy in there?

    • Merle: (after knocking T-Dog down and holding a gun) We're gonna have ourselves a little pow-wow..huh? Talk about, who's in charge. I vote me. Anybody else?
Rick: (gun butts Merle in the head) Yeah.

    • The "Legless Walker" that Rick encounters is given a back story via Webisodes on the AMC website. Her name was Hannah and was trying to get her children to a safe spot when she got killed and torn in half by walkers.

    Trivia (96)

    • The door to the outside that Chase comes in is left wide open. That's how the three Walkers following him got in. But the doorway was never shut or secured by anyone afterwards.

    • The walker that Rick encounters in the tank at the end of the episode was played by Sam Witwer. The original intention was to have a web based spinoff showing how Atlanta fell and how Witwer's character died in the tank. This never materialized since Frank Darabont was let go from the show.

    • GOOF: Rick tells the deputy that he hopes his sidearm is loaded and the safety is off. The deputy then racks the slide, loading a round in the chamber and flips his thumb and a click is heard as he flips off the safety. Two problems: Police officers always go out in the field with their sidearm loaded and the gun was a Glock, there is no external safety on the Glock. Also, spike strips do not work as shown. They leave hollow tubes in the car's tires that deflate them slowly so that the car slows and becomes more difficult to maneuver.

    • Carl is wearing a 'Science Dog' T-Shirt. A comic book character created by 'Walking Dead' creator Robert Kirkman.

    • Goof - When Rick is backing up the Truck at the construction site he turns his body backwards in order to see where he's backing up the truck, but the camera immediately cuts to the back of the truck showing that the tail gate is down, meaning Rick was looking at an empty truck body. It could be argued that the truck has the body cut out to access the back of the truck from the cabin, but the tailgate was down so it makes no difference. Also, the truck's body is separate from the cab when looking at it from the outside, but when Rick picks up the survivors at the mall he walks straight into the cab from the body of the truck as if it where a single piece.

    • Goof: Despite Rick's warning not to get blood on their skin or eyes, a patch of blood can be found on Rick's hand when he removes the gloves.

    • The shirt that Carl is wearing when he and Lori are reunited with Rick is the same one he worn in the comic version of this scene.

    • The Walker that is eating the deer Daryl was tracking was played by Greg Nicotero, the show's Co-Executive Producer and Special Effects Make-Up Designer .

    Allusions (16)

    • The character of Duane Jones is paying homage to the actor, Duane Jones, who starred as Ben in the original Night of the Living Dead.

    • When Rick leaves the hospital he passes an abandoned air cavalry helicopter. The logo on the front is the crossed swords with the number 7 in the middle, which would make it the 7th Air Cavalry unit. The Seventh Cavalry was George A. Custer's unit that was massacred at the Little Big Horn, and that numbered unit was retired from service.

    • At the end of the episode, Glenn is seen speeding down the highway Rick rode into town - most zombie and post apocalypse films feature such long empty stretches of roads which the viewer often imagines themselves speeding down if they had been in such a situation - Glenn is among, if not the first to provide this fan service.

    • Just after Glenn has been kidnapped by the renegade gang, Grimes quickly picks up the bag with guns but also makes sure to grab his sheriff hat, just like Indiana Jones. Executive Producer Frank Darabont wrote several episodes for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

    • The code name "Wildfire" is a reference to the novel The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. The novel also dealt with studying a disease in an underground lab.

    • The name of character Dr. Edwin Jenner is most probably a reference to the English scientist Dr Edward Jenner. Who in 1796 was the first to do a vaccination by inoculating material from a cowpox blister (latin vacca means cow in english) to a healthy individual, who later was protected against smallpox.

    • The bag of drugs that Daryl has with him is filled with blue colored crystal meth, which is similar to the meth cooked and sold by Walter White on another AMC TV show, Breaking Bad.

    • FEMA and the Zombie Apocalypse
In 2010, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) along with the CDCput out a pamplet on being prepared for a Zombie Apocalypse. This was to bring about awareness on what a person should have prepared no matter the disaster. To their dismay, Dale and T-dog couldn't find one of the chief items on the list among all the cars; first aid supplies.
