  • This episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Costuming for a Series.

  • The original script for The Kid included an old man (actually Kid himself as an old man and looking back to his youth adventures) narrating the story. It would have been something similar to Lonesome Dove.

  • The original script included a character named the Dog Man. He was supposed to help Kid save Katy after she's shot, but Sam ended up replacing him.

  • Even though during this episode Jimmy Hickok remembers his mother being beaten by his father, there's no historical evidence to prove that Alonso Hickok abused his wife.

Trivia (32)

  • When Lou rides up the station where he/she is shot, it's a small station. These were relay stations where the riders could change horses to keep from running them into the ground and killing the animals. It is not a Way Station where riders would sleep, bathe, eat, etc.

  • Cody and Ike have a small subplot involving Buck's medicine pouch.

  • Goof: The picture of Jimmy's mother in this episode is the same picture used in a later episode, The Keepsake, to represent one of Teaspoon's old loves.

  • Larry Soller plays a judge in a few episodes of the Young Riders. He also comes back as a shopkeeper in another episode. Mr. Soller is one of a number of local Tucson talent that was called back over and over against to appear in episodes...

  • Keep an eye on Kid... or rather his backside. When he climbs up the side of a rocky face a small rip in his pants can be seen.

  • Buck says there are too many men chasing them to count them when in reality there are maybe 9 men.

  • Miss Annabelle Mumblepuss is the name of the doll that Louise gave to her younger sister Teresa. Knowledge of the doll's name convinces her younger sister of her identity.

  • Aces and Eights is also in the episode Starlight Starbright. A character named McPhalen has the hand in that episode.

  • Title: Speak No Evil This is a reference to the three wise monkeys - Hear No Evil, See No Evil and Speak No Evil.

  • Kid: What you need is reindeer and a sleigh. Santa Claus comes from the Christmas poem A Visit From St. Nicholas by Clement C. Moore. Written for his children in 1823, St. Nicholas would have been something that Lou and Kid would have known about.

  • Title: Black Ulysses Ulysses was the Latin name for the ancient hero Odysseus, in Homer's epic, The Odyssey.

  • Sam Cain holds the hand of Aces and Eights is known as the Dead Man's hand. Famous because it was the hand that Wild Bill Hickok had in his hand when he died.

  • Speculation only since the ref. was made prior to the episode being filmed. Teaspoon makes ref. to Jimmy being with some Bad Company. There is an episode in the Second Season named Bad Company and features the song of the same name by the band of the same name.

  • Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen.

  • After Hezekiah kills himself, Buck assists Cody in preparing an Indian burial for the man. This will be echoed in Presence of Mine Enemies, when Buck builds another pyre for his own friend, Ike.

  • Jimmy: I'm sorry mister, I'm so sorry. In the earlier episode Gunfighter he says he only apologizes on Sundays.
