  • show Description
  • This half-hour comedy chronicles the hilarious world of Christopher Titus and his totally messed-up poor white trash family. Between his drunken father, his dimwitted brother, and his goody-goody best friend, it's amazing Titus is alive, let alone engaged to a "normal" girl. Titus adapted Christopher Titus' stand-up routine in a novel way: each episode is narrated by Titus from a black & white "Neutral Space," from which he comments on the events as they unfold, punctuated by short, surreal flashbacks to his childhood and adolescence. The hilarious interplay between these three levels of narrative is sometimes amazingly complex and even contradictory, highlighting the exceedingly black nature of the show's humor. Alas, the Fox network lived up to its history of commissioning innovative television and then sabotaging it; the third and blackest season was made particularly incoherent by showing the sequences out of logical order. Titus never made it to syndication, and is currently unavailable — a buried gem — until its release on DVD in September 2005.moreless

    • Dave: Do what he says. He's crazy! Titus: I am looking for a man named "pudding." (behind him, Dave pantomimes Titus is crazy) I'm assuming it's a nickname.

    • Erin: Did it ever occur to you that there might be something going on in my life that's worse then me having an affair? Titus: I'm dying? Erin: This is not about you. Dave: I'm dying?

    • Titus: (wearing knight's helmet) I spend a lot of time trying to unlearn things my father taught me--things like, "extreme measures get extreme results." Ken: (on a dock with Dave and Titus at ten years old) Okay, Dave, it's time to teach you to learn how to swim. Now don't be a wussy. (He tosses Dave into the water) Okay, now swim. One arm over the other--no, no, no, no--oh crap. (tosses in a life preserver) Grab the--just--Christopher, go save your brother. (tosses Titus into the water)

    • Titus: My dad invented sexual harassment. In every current sexual harassment lawsuit, my dad gets a royalty check.

    • (closing narration) Titus: When you're born, you're pure. Unspoiled and trusting. Some say it's the only time we're perfect. You're also born covered in blood and placenta. No one gets nostalgic about that.

    • Titus: Dave's my brother. I love him with all my heart. No matter how many times I'm charged as an accessory.

    • Titus: Erin's the one. She's my heart. She's my soul. She owns me. And when you give yourself to someone so completely, you gotta make sure they're not screwin around on ya.

    • (opening narration) Titus: When you're born, you're pure, unspoiled and trusting. I believe everything and everyone. Then I met my parents.

    • This episode was nominated for the Casting Society Of America's 2000 Artios Award for Best Casting for TV-Comedy Pilot.

    • On the DVD release this is the second episode.

    • In the DVD commentary, Titus, Jack Kenny and Brian Hargrove state that they had to fight with FOX to cast Stacy Keach as Ken Titus.

    • Titus once stole a federal mailbox.

    • This is the pilot episode, and logically should have been aired first, as it establishes the basic relationships hilariously.

    • On the DVD version, after the closing monologue, there is a black screen that gives information for the National Mental Health Services Knowledge Exchange Network.

    • In the closing monologue, Titus says "Norman Rockwell is bleeding". This is a reference to (and possibly a direct port from) the original stage show written by Christopher Titus from which the show grew, entitled, natch, "Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding" as mentioned in the closing credits.

    • After the episode aired, there was a black screen with the words, "If you would like to learn more about schizophrenia, go to FOX.com".

    • Titus: You have to make sure that no one discovers the true identity of...Your-Dream-Is-Stupid Man! Many parodies of the '60s Batman TV series. There's also a running gag between Tommy and Dave about who gets to be Robin and who gets to be Alfred.

    • Titus: She's too hot, why don't I just ask out the Bangels? The Bangels are a female pop band from the 80s best known for their hit Walk Like An Egyptian
