  • Top Chef Masters is the first of the Top Chef spin-offs. The series is produced by the Emmy Award-winning Magical Elves with Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz who serve as executive producers.Season Four: The show relocates to Las Vegas, and the challenges will no doubt reflect the glitzy new atmosphere. Twelve chefs, some repeaters from seasons one and two, compete for cash prizes that will be donated to their selected charities. Each round has $15,000 up for grabs from Quickfire and Elimination challenges. The chefs compete singly or in teams for a spot in the final and a shot at the $100,000 grand prize with its Top Chef Master title. Season Three: Season three hits the grill with a sizzle and some major changes. The competition has been retooled so that it is closer to the mother ship in format, has a smaller group of chefs and the resident critics have been pared down to two. What has not changed are the chefs at the top of their games, unique challenges, and a star-studded guest critic list. 12 master chefs compete in Quickfire and Elimination challenges as each one vies for the title of Top Chef Master and $100,000 for his or her charity. This season's challenges will use some of the Top Chef favorites, only with master twists to match these chefs' superior skills. Curtis Stone joins as host, and food critic and author Ruth Reichl begins her tour as judge with James Oseland, who returns from seasons one and two. A Magical Elves production.Season Two: Season two has arrived, and not content to sit on their laurels, Magical Elves has cooked up new Challenges, Quickfires and intense pressures for the chefs, as well as allowed some familiar faces back into the kitchen. This time around there are only 22 chefs, and the heats will play out over four weeks, instead of six. The two chefs with the highest star scores from each heat will move to the six-week champions round from which the Top Chef Master will be named. Kelly Choi continues her duties as host. Gail Simmons joins the judges' panel full time; her skills burnishing an already stellar group comprising food critic Jay Rayner, culinary expert James Oseland and restaurant critic Gael Greene.Season One: Twenty-four master chefs at the pinnacle of their professions play for $100,000 awarded to the winner's favorite charity, and the title of Top Chef Master. Let the judges be judged. The first of Magical Elves' Top Chef franchise shows hits the airwaves this summer, and while it may seem very similar to the original, the differences will test these executive chefs in very different ways. During the first six weeks of competition, groups of four will vie in heats with the winner moving forward to the four week champions round. Each night has two parts, an amped twist on a previous Top Chef Quickfire challenge that measures basic skill sets, and then an elimination that tests ingenuity and creativity as the chefs attempt to please both the diners and judges in order to progress to the finals.     • Although the press release for this episode mentioned drawing knives to determine who competed in the episode (à la Top Chef's team challenges), if a scene was filmed depicting the activity it did not make the final cut for broadcast.

    • Jay Rayner wasn't able to be in LA for some of the early filming days for this episode due to a delay in getting his Visa from the US Gov't, and was therefore unable to do one of the chef introduction scenes which his fellow critics did. His place was filled at the last minute by regular Top Chef Judge Gail Simmons.

    • The Top Chef franchise returns to Los Angeles for Top Chef Masters. The second season of Top Chef was filmed in LA. One of the four chefs competing in this episode, Hubert Keller, was a Guest Judge during season two, but he did not appear while the competition was in Los Angeles; he was on the Judges' Table for the finale in Hawaii.

    • Wylie is one of only two chefs that Critic Jay Rayner had ever interacted with prior to appearing on Top Chef Masters. Unfortunately, that interaction included Wylie offering to "take it outside" after Jay referred to Wylie as being "gastronomically illiterate" in a review.

    • According to Kelly Choi in her blog, the vending machines were acting up terribly when the chefs were trying to make their purchases, especially for Wylie – the machine would either swallow his quarters, or the arms wouldn't release enough to drop his selections. The production team's solution was to kick the machines repeatedly until the chefs got their products.

    • Elizabeth also made some coconut crêpes for her Elimination round dish, but unfortunately they didn't make it onto the plate.

    • Douglas' attempt to serve soup in a flaming coconut was agreed by all the diners to have been a failure in execution, but by none more than Guest Critic Gail Simmons. This is because shortly before this episode was filmed, she traveled to Vietnam and was served a marvelous shrimp soup that was actually cooked inside a coconut that is set on fire on the outside using alcohol. Sterno, which Douglas used, is a petroleum based gel that has a very strong odor, and the vapors from it added a very unpleasant taste to his dish.

    • According to her blog at the Bravo website, Gael had never been in the Magic Castle before the episode was filmed, but she was quite familiar with some aspects of it- she had written an article a number of years ago on "The Best Bathrooms in Los Angeles", and the Magic Castle made the list!

    • Jr. Girl Scout #1: (about Michael's peanut butter chocolate candy) Those, um, kinda taste like Tagalongs. Christopher: Whose cookies are those? Michael: Not mine! I'm not taking credit for 'em. She is referencing one of the eleven different cookies girl scouts of all types sell each year. The Tagalong is a chocolate-covered cookie with a layer of peanut butter inside, which is why Michael's candy reminds her of it, and why he refuses to take responsibility for producing the equivalent of a boxed cookie.

    • Title: "The Lost Supper" Tonight's episode title is a wordplay on the story of the Last Supper found in the New Testament, where Jesus eats a last meal before Judas betrays him and he's crucified.

    • Douglas: It's cool that we get to cook for Doogie Howser! Douglas is stoked to be cooking for actor Neil Patrick Harris, star of the current comic TV show How I Met Your Mother, as well as the title role in Doogie Howser, M.D., which followed the life of a teenage genuis who became a board certified surgeon at age 16.

    • Michael: (teasing Rick) You're like the Johnny Cash of cooking! Michael is alluding to Johnny Cash's penchant for wearing black (earning him the nickname The Man in Black), as Rick does in this episode.

    • Art: (referring to Roy) Sir Spamalot, you are!
      Art is getting several references in here, most notably for Monty Python's Spamalot, which is a broadway musical version of the comic movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It's also a nod to Roy's Hawaiian heritage, since Spam is so popular there it's sometimes called "The Hawaiian Steak".

    • Michael: To be in the top three of the first twenty-four chefs chosen to do this is like, Rocky Marciano, Rocky Balboa, and Rocky's trainer all fighting at the same time. And you get to the end, and you're all just throwing punches!
      Rocky Marciano was a the heavyweight champion of the world from Sept 1952 to Apr 1956. He's the only heavyweight champion to end his career having won every fight. Rocky Balboa is the fictional boxer played by Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky film franchise; Burgess Meredith played his trainer in the first few movies.

    • Jimmy: (when asked how he liked working with Govind) Ebony and ivory. "Ebony and Ivory" was a hit duet in the '80s by two masters of the music world, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. The phrase "ebony and ivory" in the song refers to the keys of a piano, which harmonize beautifully together, and then asks why men of different races can't do the same thing.

  • This is a multi part show where each week for the first 6 weeks 4 chefs compete for a chance to get into the finals. The difference here is these are established chefs, not cooking wannabes and some of them have actually been judges on the show.
