One of the chefs complained that they were not being judged by pros, but by the cast of the show Flipping Out. The problem with that criticism is that diners in restaurants are not pros, but regular people. Chefs need to please their customers, not critics that give prizes.
Rick did not have his dish ready in time and got zero points. OUCH! Nils did not fry his shrimp and there was a comment about that.
Appetizer, entree and dessert for 100 people, with no help, in miniature.
Micheal: shaved Brussels sprout salad, spicy prawns, balsamic marinated strawberries with goat milk basil gelato and bittersweet chocolate creme fraiche. The gelato did not freeze in the machine. Chiarello had to put it in the freezer and hope for the best the next day. Some complained that Michael got help from a guest. There were four components to the dish and she helped with the plating. Rick: opakapaka cerviche, brandade of scallops & shrimps, preserved lemon custard. The judges swooned over all of Rick's dishes. They looked good and tasted better. Everything was perfect. How he made 100 individual custards by himself was a marvel to the judges.
Nils: diced scallops, slow cooked salmon, chocolate goat cheese ganache. The appetizer was pretty and the judges loved the taste. They marveled over how he cooked the salmon. However, Nils made a dessert that called upon his Swedish background. The smoky flavor overpowered the flavor of the dish and was disliked by everyone.
Lachlan: deep fried pineapple, grilled short ribs, strawberry and frangipone tart. The pineapple did not do well deep fried. The entree was received well. The dessert had a bit of an odd taste.
Michael 4 1/2 + 3 1/2 + 11 1/2 = 19 1/2 stars
Rick 0 + 4 + 13 = 17 stars
Nils 3 + 3 1/2 + 10 1/2 = 17 stars
Lachlan 3 + 3 1/2 + 9 = 15 1/2 stars
I almost thought Rick could pull this off. He won the Elimination Challenge. I am very proud of his effort. Nils' dessert lost the contest for him. Lachlan had two dishes that were not the best. Michael had a nice salad and entree with an inventive dessert that won the day.moreless
Flipping Out over diners, not critics!
First of all, I agree with the one reviewer above me is that diners are the ones that you should please. Not the critics as the critics are the pros. But the diners are the one that seals your fate. As one chef was complaining about. We then get a visit from Flipping Out's Jeff and Jeni. Jeff I think has got a big attitude problem. Even though I like his cool and nicer partner on the FO show. The three-course meal is then prepared later on and that Michael is the one that wins. And he's getting to move on.moreless
