  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (5)

    • Richard: Look what I got! (holds up a pair of knickers) Fearne: Sean Paul's pants! Richard: Ugh... they're not even clean! Fearne: Ooh, Let's put them away! How lovely. (Richard throws the dirty knickers off screen and we hear a female voice cry out) Richard: All of that means... (to audience member) Oh look, I threw it out, Hello!

    • Sean Paul: I have a present for the Top of the Pops girls, you know wha' a mean? Richard: You can't see this but he's now throwing some knickers out to the audience! Fearne: Wow! Richard: At least six pairs! Fearne: He has a rucksack of knickers! Richard: It's like a magic trick, it's a never ending stream of knickers!

    • Richard: Our next artist moved from Northampton to Los Angeles to become a pop star. Why she thought there'd be more opportunity in Los Angeles than Northampton escapes me(!).

    • (Mariah Carey has a purple translucent glittery colour around the main body of her microphone) Fearne: I have got total, utter microphone envy. My microphone's rubbish compared to Mariah's! Richard: You're right to have microphone envy! That is quite a mic'!

    • Richard: I've got a mild cough which you might hear during the show, you might not. It's a lottery!

    Notes (5)

    • Laundry Service: At the end of his performance, Sean Paul started pulling ladies knickers out of a rucksack and handing them to members of the audience.

    • Archive shows: Richard's choice of Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' was taken from Episode #:1115, broadcast 22nd August 1985. Fearne's choice of Nirvana 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was taken from Episode #:1446, broadcast 28th November 1991. The short clip of Satus Quo 'Matchstick Men' was from Episode #220, broadcast 15th February 1968 (not December as the caption says). This is the only surviving material of this performance. The Pussycat Dolls repeat performance is taken from Episode #'2174, 4th September 2005.

    • How many?: Fearne uses Status Quo's own estimation that they've been on Top of the Pops "over a hundred times". Actually (according to the official archive database) they've only appeared 86 times.

    • Open Sesame!: Mariah's stage act involved appearing from behind two doors opened either side by two stage performers. Unfortunately one of the performers left it too late and Mariah ended up pushing at the remaining closed door.

    • Poorly Presenter: Richard Bacon explained he was suffering from a cough whilst presenting the show.

    Trivia (10)

    • Onscreen Factoid: Lead [Pussycat Dolls] singer, Nicole Scherzinger won US talent show Popstars in 2001.

    • Onscreen Factoid: Sean Paul originally wanted to pursue a career in hotel management.

    • Onscreen Factoid: 'Teen Spirit' is a popular brand of deodorant in the US and when a friend spray painted 'Kurt smells like Teen Spirit' on Mr Cobain's bedroom wall a legend was born! This was the only time Nirvana appeared on Top of the Pops although you might remember them on 'The Word' where they were booked by a young researcher called Jo Whiley!

    • Onscreen Factoid: The [Dead 60's] band's name is from a Liverpudlian phrase 'You sound dead 60s'.

    • Onscreen Factoid: This is the first time Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb have recorded together since their December 1980 hit single 'Guilty'. Their album, also called, 'Guilty' sold 12 million copies worldwide. Not a bad for a lady who in 2003 said she was bored of singing her own songs.

    Allusions (2)

    • Richard: Gorillaz are in at seven. Is it just me, or do they look like Charlie off Lost? Richard is referring to the Demon Days album cover and jokingly comparing the cartoon faces to the character of Charlie played by Dominic Monaghan in the hit American drama series Lost.

    • Caption: ...you might remember them [Nirvana] on 'The Word' where they were booked by a young researcher called Jo Whiley! 'The Word' was a late night entertainment show on Channel 4 during the early 90's. It's reknown for the controversial behaviour of the many celebrities featured on it. Jo Whiley now has a regular weekday slot on Radio 1 and has also presented Top of the Pops many times.
