    • Esther: The paramedics, they said he didn't stand a chance.
Dr. Juarez: Looks like someone changed the rules. Miracles got... easy. It's not just Rex who's still alive. It's everyone else.

    • Oswald Danes: I can guarantee, Mr. Peterssen, that when I talk of lawyers, I mean the team who will be suing the Governor. And I mean the Governor himself, not his office, but the actual man. They will be suing him for wrongful imprisonment. And I promise you that they will sue his ass to high heaven, till angels sing songs of him in their laments.

    • Rex: Do I get better? Do I heal? Do I just hurt for the rest of my life? Because of this thing keeps going, the rest of my life is for forever, right?
Dr. Juarez: Rex, now listen to me. Because you might want to take something into consideration. Maybe you were lucky. You should have died last night. But when this... thing happened, the miracle, it gave me time to fix you. Without the miracle, you'd be dead.
Rex: It's like someone cast a spell on the whole world. But what happens when it stops? What happens to me then? Do I die?

    • Esther: Oh my God. Is he going to die?
Jack: Don't worry about it. No one dies these days.

    • Geraint Cooper: There she is. Princess.
Mary Cooper: Look at her, love. She's huge.
      Gwen: She's perfectly normal, Mum.
Mary Cooper: But you've been frugal. What you feeding her, lard?
Gwen: Yes, Mum. I'm feeding her lard. Keep telling her that and by the time she's 13, she'll have a complete psychological complex.

    • Rex: And what the hell is this bridge? The Severn Bridge?
Esther: It connects England to Wales.
Rex: You mean Wales is separate? Uh. It's like the British equivalent of New Jersey.

    • Gwen: So much for tying him up.
Rhys: I've never tied up a person.
Gwen: Men are good at knots. How many times have you told me that?
      Rhys: Yeah, at Christmas.
Rex: Hey. Hey, hey, hey, hey. I had a pole through my chest. I was dead, then I wasn't. I had to pay for this bridge. And now I want to know what the hell is going on, all right? Because I was dead and now I'm not.

    • Oswald Danes: When are you gonna let me go? Alexander Peterssen: I don't think that's possible. Oswald Danes: I served my sentence. Alexander Peterssen: Granted the execution was... flawed.

    Trivia (11)

    • Jack Harkness uses the alias 'Owen Harper' when identifying himself over the undead body of the suicide bomber. Owen Harper was the name of Torchwood's medic during the first two seasons while the show was still running on the BBC.

    • When Gwen asks Rex to say something to demonstrate the functionality of the I-5s and lip-reading software, he gives his full name and adds that he is representing the Central Intelligence Agency. However, the software replaces "representing" with "resenting."

    • Jack comments that the warehouse is "bigger on the inside than the outside," referring to the TARDIS, the time/space vehicle piloted by the Doctor. Jack met the Doctor in World War II and traveled with him for a while, and gained immortality as a result of his travels.

    • When Oswald picks up the baby at the hospital, it only has one sock on, yet for the rest of his speech the baby then has socks on both feet.

    • Jack uses the alias "John Smith" while speaking to Frumkin in the park. While "John Smith" is a commonly used alias and a common generic name, it is likely that Jack's use of it in this episode is a reference to his friend The Doctor who has consistently used the alias in many of his regenerations.

    • When the hospital representative opens her folder and says "I have set up a schedule," she opens her folder but it and the papers inside are upside down.

    • While Rex Matheson is recording, we get to see through the viewer the battery and time left to record. When he starts, the battery is at 54 minutes and the tape is 1 hour 23 minutes. After he goes outside and continues to record for awhile, we again see the timers again and they are still the same (54 minutes battery and 1 hour 23 minutes on the tape). Yet, more than a minute has passed.

    • In the episode "The Categories of Life," Rex Matheson is recording the events at the module. The viewer is able to see the battery and time left to record. Throughout the episode it stays at 54 minutes battery time and 1 hour 23 minutes time left to record. At the beginning of this episode the battery time is still 54 minutes and time left to record is 1 hour 23 minutes even with him recording the death of Doctor Juarez, multiple modules, and his recording information about his being in Torchwood.

    • Sergeant Andy: And you, big lunk. Daddy Day Care.
Referencing the 2003 movie starring Eddie Murphy as a stay-at-home dad who decides to go into the home daycare business after he loses his job.

    • Captain Jack Harkness: Bigger on the inside than the outside.
Jack is referencing the show Doctor Who (of which Torchwood is a spinoff), and the time machine the TARDIS, which is described as being "bigger on the inside than the outside."

    • Esther: There's a poem. "I have been one acquainted with the night. I have walked out in rain and back in rain."
Esther is quoting from Robert Frost's 1928 poem Acquainted with the Night, which is typically read as the author's feelings of depression and isolation.

    • Esther: "Miles to go before we sleep."
Quoting Robert Frost's Stopped by Woods on a Snowy Evening (1922), and published in 1923 in his New Hampshire volume.

    • Vera: (to Rex) Can't get rid of you, can I, dead man walking?

Vera is referencing a previous Torchwood episode from the second season that was titled "Dead Man Walking," as well as the Torchwood character Owen Harper, the dead man walking.

    • Title: Escape to L.A.

The title is a play on the title of the 1996 movie Escape from L.A., produced and directed by John Carpenter as a sequel to his 1981 movie Escape from New York. The movie features a mercenary, Snake Plissken, breaking into the futuristic Los Angeles, which is used as a maximum-security prison.

    • Jack: George Eliot wrote this chapter in Middlemarch.
Referencing the 1871-1872 novel Middlemarch: A Study in Provincial Life, by George Eliot (aka Mary Anne Evans). The novel, published in eight books, chronicles the adventures of Dorothea Brooke, who seeks to help the poor, and Dr. Tertius Lydgate, an idealistic young doctor. Both live in the Midlands town of Middlemarch.

    • Allen Shapiro: (to Jack Harkness) And what is it with you, Red Baron? You got Snoopy up your ass?

This alludes to the comic strip Peanuts (1950-2000) by Charles Shultz (1922-2000) where Charlie Brown's dog Snoopy imagines he's a WWI pilot trying to shoot down the Red Baron AKA Baron Von Richthofen (1892-1918), a legendary WWI (1914-1918) German ace credited with shooting down 80 Allied planes.
