  • show Description
  • Welcome to the TUGS guide at TV.com. This show was made by Robert D. Cardona and David Mitton who were the directors of 'Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends'. This show ran for 13 episodes. It was set in the fictional Bigg City Port during the 1920s. It was about two rival tugboat companies. The heroic Star Fleet run by Captain Star who was the narrator of the show and the villanous Z Stacks run by the devious Captain Zero. The members of the Star Fleet are 2 harbour switchers; the spunky Ten Cents and his friend Sunshine who joins them in the first episode. 3 harbour tugs; the strong Scottish Big Mac, the wise old Welsh O.J. and the simple-minded but strong Warrior. 1 railway tug; the obnoxious snob Top Hat and 1 ocean tug; the much conceited Hercules. The Z Stack members were 3 harbour tugs; their mean leader Zorran, and Zebedee the cool/level-headed character, who occasionally helped the Star Tugs and Zak, the quiet follower, yet still nasty... The other members were the two bumbling harbour switchers; Zip and Zug.Both these Fleets would sometimes compete against each other for contracts or help ships or vessels.moreless

    • Zak: I like that bit about "better looking". (chuckles)

    • Top Hat: (To Sunshine) As it seems, we've found out the accident wasn't you're fault, so everything's okay now! Sunshine: Huh? Really? Ten Cents: An apology from Top Hat! I don't believe it!

    • Zorran: (To Zip and Zug) His [Big Mac] route is close to the mud banks, okay? Zip: So? Zorran: So, just stuff him onto one! Okay, stupid? Zug: You've done it before to yourself Zip, so you'll soon catch on. Zip: Uh, I'll catch on, Zorran.

    • Zip: Thinking devious, eh, Zorran? Zorran: No, just thinking "contract".

    • Ten Cents (to Sunshine): ...You understand? Sunshine: Aye aye sir! Ten Cents: Now you see, you only call Captain Star "sir". I'm just Ten Cents, okay? Sunshine: Yes! Eh...sure thing... Ten... Cents!

    • Top Hat: There he goes, always playing Mr. Nice Guy. What a bore.

    • Ten Cents: Sunshine, meet Sally. She's a seaplane. Sunshine: Hel_lo (whistles) Sally!

    • OJ: Ten Cents, have you seen Big Mac? Ten Cents: No, but that's your problem.

    Notes (149)

    • A tram steamer shown in this episode is the same model type as Johnny Cuba.

    • First episode to involve a permanent addition to the Star tug or Z-stack fleet.

    • Only appearance of the Sea-plane Yard.

    • This is Sally Seaplane's only speaking role.

    • According to model maker Chris Tulloch, O.J. was the easiest model to use because of his paddle wheel.

    • Izzy Gomez appears in "Special Attraction", an episode in the 4th season of "Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends". His head & sombrero were removed to make him look less characteristic, though.

    • According to Chris Tulloch, Zorran's eye-mechanism would always push up his hat when he rolled his eyes up. The crew decided to leave this reaction, as it suited Zorran's character perfectly!

    • Zebedee & Zip appeared in "Something In The Air", an episode in the 5th season of "Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends", albeit missing their heads & hats.

    Trivia (101)

    • On the scene where we see Warrior pulling the Duchess in, he is wearing Big Mac's "strained" face. You can tell this is Big Mac's, because Big Mac has red cheeks.

    • When Captain Star is explaining the hard work of the tugs at the beginning, Sunshine is seen helping Ten Cents in the background with his Star Fleet colours. At this moment, he was not only not part of the fleet, but he hasn't even been introduced!

    • When Captain Zero was speaking with the Z Stacks, they're facing the wrong way.

    • As Captain Zero speaks to his Z Stacks, look closely and you'll see a crew member's hand through the window which makes the megaphone move.

    • After finding Sunshine at the end of the episode, Warrior rushes up river when he remembers his promise to tow Izzy; but he should have gone back down river.

    • When the fireworks are being displayed, you see Hercules near the Duchess and Ten Cents moving towards him, but Ten Cents doesn't know that Hercules had come back from up the coast.

    • Sunshine's stack bends when he is pushed into the duchess by Zorran.

    • When individual shots are taken of the Star Tugs docking the Duchess, they aren't moving.

    • Top Hat: I do believe they (Ten Cents and OJ) see themselves as Sir Francis Drake. Sir Francis Drake was the captain of on English fleet in the war against the Spanish Armada in 1588.
